Overview TRC’s health effects team is part of the Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHS) practice within TRC and is a leader in toxicology, exposure science and risk assessment. The team is led by Dr. Dennis Paustenbach, a board-certified toxicologist and industrial hygienist with nearly 40 years of experience in risk assessment, environmental engineering, toxicology and occupational health. Dr. Paustenbach and his team provides expert witness testimony and analysis of the health effects of chemicals in sediments, air, soil, consumer products, foods, groundwater, and the workplace. The Company’s expertise ranges across the fields of exposure science, epidemiology, chemical and biomedical engineering and radionuclides. We are seeking a PhD Toxicologist/Pharmacologist who wishes to use scholarly approaches to answer complex exposure and human health risk-related questions. We currently have offices in Boulder, Colorado; Jackson, Wyoming; and Costa Mesa, California. Candidates new to consulting are strongly encouraged to work in the Jackson office for a period of time. TRC is seeking highly motivated Ph.D. candidates for full-time positions. M.S. candidates will be considered based on background experience. This is an excellent career opportunity for candidates who wish to work in a professional science field in a non-laboratory setting. In this role, you will work on projects involving aspects of toxicology, epidemiology, industrial hygiene, and conduct risk assessments on a wide variety of chemicals. As part of a team, you will provide scientific support to senior consultants on many diverse projects related to evaluating human health risks from occupational and environmental exposures. Candidates who apply should have the strong desire and ability to work in a fast-paced environment, learn about and research a wide range of related scientific disciplines, and combine this information, along with their knowledge, skills, and experiences, to identify solutions to human health risk challenges. Most projects encompass exposures to chemicals in the workplace, community, or via consumer products, as well as some aspects of toxicology, epidemiology, science in the courtroom, and/or the application of regulatory approaches to quantitatively characterize risks posed by chemicals. There is a heavy emphasis on reading and writing in this position, and candidates who apply should have proficient writing skills for technical and lay audiences, as well as a desire to work in a writing-intensive environment. This is a unique opportunity for someone interested in a steep 4-8 year learning curve to be on the ground floor of an expanding department. Those with some experience in consulting are preferred, but new graduates are also encouraged to apply. Responsibilities Critically evaluate published scientific papers and reports in the environmental sciences, industrial hygiene, toxicology, epidemiology, and occupational medicine fields Perform qualitative and quantitative exposure and risk assessments for a variety of chemicals Work with senior scientists who serve as testifying experts in toxic tort litigation Review and summarize legal documents, including deposition and trial testimony Assist with the production of technical work products, presentations, and proposals Interact with clients on projects, both in-person and electronically Conduct research that may be presented at scientific conferences or submitted to scientific journals We seek those who which to contribute to the profession via writing papers for scientific journals Candidate needs a high level of self-initiative Qualifications Doctoral degree in toxicology, pharmacology (or related field), who has had some classroom experience of the following disciplines: Risk Assessment classes Exposure Assessment Industrial Hygiene Toxicology (several courses) Epidemiology Environmental Engineering Biostatistics Physiology/anatomy Educational or practical experience in the application of risk assessment is a plus but is not required Record of publishing scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals on topics related to toxicology or environmental science is desirable Must be self-motivated, highly detail-oriented, adaptable, and effective with time management Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a desire to work in a position with a heavy emphasis on both technical and lay writing Aptitude for multi-tasking among various projects with competing and dynamic deadlines Ability to work well independently and in a team environment Current and future U.S. work authorization is required Our Mission We understand our clients’ goals, and embrace them as our own, applying creativity, experience, integrity and dedication to deliver superior solutions to the world’s energy, environment and infrastructure challenges. Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors. Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
