Transaction Analyst

Position Summary:

Under periodic supervision of the General Accounting manager, the Transaction Analyst works independently to apply accounting theory to prepare bank reconciliations, remit unclaimed property to multiple states, and prepare regulatory reports.  Prepares and reviews internal accounting documents and performs other accounting duties.  Identifies problems and provides resolution related to cash transactions and journals recording cash transactions, and some problems are complex.

Ideal candidates should have skills and experience related to account reconciliation in a highly automated system. The ability to provide customer support is also important.

Please note that we anticipate interviews for this position to take place in early to mid-January.

Workplace Requirements 

Hybrid position: This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $56,000 - $69,900

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree

In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted

2+ years of related experience

Skills:

Advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and accounting principles Advanced knowledge of accounting systems

Preferences:

Three years of directly related experience Problem solving and analytical skills Experience working in an institution of higher education Experience working in an automated accounting system such as Oracle Cloud Financials Experience with Workiva or similar cloud-based reporting and compliance platforms.

Essential Functions:

Serves as a representative of the University, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with other members of the Rice community and with the public. Reconciles balance sheet accounts as assigned, primarily ten operations bank accounts.  Gathers and analyzes data to detect errors, then researches source documents to determine necessary corrections.  Identifies systemic problems and possible solutions.  Communicates with department or individual responsible to educate regarding University policy and prevent future errors.     Reviews internal accounting documents submitted by campus departments for correct coding and approval as well as compliance with University policies.   Load documents into automated accounting system.  Resolves problems and answers departmental queries.  Instructs campus users in interpreting accounting reports, appropriate use of accounting forms, and interpretation of University policy as it relates to accounting.   Prepares unclaimed property reports for multiple states and initiates remittance to appropriate entity.  Requires research of state regulation and continuing education on changing requirements across multiple states.   Prepares accounting entries for correction of prior errors.   Gathers and analyzes data necessary to resolve any related problems and communicates with department responsible to prevent future errors.     Prepares assigned schedules for University’s federal tax return, annual audit, and annual financial statements.  Requires reading and interpreting technical instructions, as well as developing and implementing reporting procedures.  Responds to inquiries regarding schedules prepared.  Work product reviewed prior to use or submission.  Processes chart of accounts maintenance including creating, terminating and changing all elements of the chart and responding to inquiries from campus for guidance on use of accounts.  Performs all other duties as assigned                      

Additional Functions

Coordinates identification of unclaimed payments with other areas of Controller’s Office such as Payroll and Procure to Pay. Contributes to and leads improvements to the processes and documentation of cash transactions across multiple departments.
