Patients who come to UChicago Medicine with head and neck diseases can rest assured that our experts’ internationally recognized expertise enables them to offer the most advanced and innovative approaches to the management of otolaryngology (ENT) disorders. Subspecialists are equipped to treat allergies, inner ear and hearing disorders, head and neck cancers, speech and voice disorders, and much more. Our diverse programs ensure every patient utilizes their senses as best as possible in order to lead healthy and productive lives.

Through the section’s comprehensive research efforts, faculty members and researchers hope to find new and better ways of treating a broad range of diseases. One such research project that has received widespread national attention and support is Project Aspire and its sister project the Thirty Million Words Initiative—they aim to use family-centered curriculum and parent language to bridge the achievement gap between groups of children.


Job Summary
 

The job contributes to the scientific direction of the Section of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. The successful candidate will perform a variety of complex and technical data management duties in support of clinical and translational research studies conducted by principal investigators (PIs) for the research program to ensure adherence to clinical and experimental protocols and the quality of information received. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for managing the Head and Neck Cancer BioSpecimen Bank and research data.

Responsibilities

Organizes, requests, and collates data of multiple types required to perform translational and computational experiments, including personal health data, digital imaging data, genomics data, clinical data, human tissue, and human biospecimens.

Writes, implements, and develops efficient code to interface with machine learning tools and pipelines for data requests, processing, and analysis, with an awareness of implementing large-language models and natural language processing methods to extract outcomes from clinical data.

Uses programming skills to aggregate data from existing sources and perform QC.

Develops and codes data dictionaries for discrete data.

Performs queries of existing databases to build cohorts, generates summary statistics, and writes reports for ongoing projects.

Provides expertise for high-level or complex data-related requests and engages other IT resources as needed. Partners with other campus teams and industry collaborators to assist faculty with data science related needs.

Performs data cleaning as required for self-directed experiments, as well as for ongoing projects with team members and other collaborators.

Refines and revises broad research questions into manageable research hypotheses and aims. Thinks strategically about how to leverage existing data and how to acquire new sources of data to fuel robust analyses.

Conducts reviews of the published and unpublished literature.

Assists as co-author on scientific journal articles, including the development and maintenance of literature databases and utilizing Endnote software.

Manages the Head and Neck Cancer Biospecimen Bank.

Understands research initiatives and implements data and biospecimen collection.

Interacts with relevant stakeholders for collecting, banking, and retrieval of biospecimen as needed.

Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.

Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage, analyze and make recommendations on complex data sets for research.

Trains and mentors laboratory personnel.

Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Education:

Ph.D. in Molecular or Cancer Biology, Genetics, or related field. 

Experience:

Experience facilitating and promoting a research project or contributing to the scientific direction of a research resource.

Prior experience working in Translational/Clinical research settings or Core Facility.
