Job Title: Transmission Engineer
Primary Objective of the Job:
As a TRANSMISSION Engineer at Digicel, you will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and maintaining microwave communication systems to support our network infrastructure in Jamaica. Responsible for ensuring the efficient operation and optimization of microwave links, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable and high-quality microwave services. Responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the DWDM network infrastructure to ensure the efficient and reliable transmission of data, voice, and video services across our network. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of Digicel's telecommunications network and support the evolving needs of our customers.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Microwave
Design and deploy microwave communication systems, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint links, for Digicel's network infrastructure. Conduct site surveys and perform link planning to determine optimal microwave link configurations, considering factors such as terrain, capacity requirements, and path clearance. Install, commission, and integrate microwave equipment, including antennas, radios, and associated hardware, following industry best practices and standards. Perform radio frequency (RF) path studies and interference analysis to identify and mitigate potential signal degradation or radio frequency interference. Conduct system performance evaluations, monitor microwave links, and troubleshoot issues to ensure optimal network performance and reliability. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as network operations, transmission, and core network engineers, to ensure seamless integration and synchronization of microwave systems. Develop and maintain documentation related to microwave network infrastructure, including network diagrams, equipment configurations, and link performance reports. Stay updated with industry trends, new technologies, and best practices related to microwave communication systems. Assist in capacity planning and network optimization activities to support the growing demands of Digicel's network. Participate in on-call rotation and respond to network emergencies or escalations related to microwave systems.
DWDM
DWDM Network Design: Collaborate with the network planning team to design and develop the DWDM network infrastructure based on business requirements. This includes creating network architecture, selecting appropriate equipment, and designing network topology for optimal performance and capacity. Implementation and Configuration: Install, configure, and commission DWDM equipment and devices such as optical transport systems, optical amplifiers, optical filters, and multiplexers. Ensure proper connectivity and integration with existing network elements. Network Monitoring and Maintenance: Monitor the DWDM network to identify and resolve performance issues, faults, and alarms. Perform regular maintenance activities, including software upgrades, patch installations, and firmware updates. Proactively optimize network capacity and performance. Troubleshooting and Fault Resolution: Investigate and troubleshoot network issues, both proactively and reactively, by analyzing logs, alarms, and performance metrics. Diagnose and resolve faults in a timely manner to minimize service disruption and ensure network availability. Capacity Planning: Monitor network traffic patterns, bandwidth utilization, and network performance metrics to forecast capacity requirements. Collaborate with the network planning team to ensure adequate capacity and scalability to meet customer demands. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation of network configurations, changes, and troubleshooting procedures. Generate reports on network performance, capacity utilization, and maintenance activities. Provide regular updates to the management team on network status and performance. Collaboration and Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including network operations, project management, and vendors, to coordinate network deployments, upgrades, and maintenance activities. Liaise with internal stakeholders and external vendors to ensure compliance with technical standards and industry best practices.
Academic qualifications and experience required for job:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field. Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP) will be an advantage. Proven experience in designing, deploying, and maintaining microwave communication systems, preferably in a telecommunications environment.
Functional Skills:
Familiarity with microwave planning tools and software for link budget calculations, path analysis, and frequency planning. Proficiency in performing RF measurements, spectrum analysis, and troubleshooting microwave-related issues. Strong understanding of optical transmission principles, including fiber optics, wavelengths, and signal modulation. Experience with DWDM equipment from vendors such as Ribbon (ECI) or Huawei. Understanding of network protocols, routing, and networking concepts. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with cross-functional teams. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues. Proficiency in network monitoring and management tools.
