Reporting to the Supervising Engineer, Transmission Planning, this position applies power system engineering principles, various analysis skills, and good utility practices in various planning studies to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective connections of load and generator customers. This position will also perform planning studies to support transmission system projects and capital maintenance projects and take on responsibilities of developing and maintaining transmission system model.
Responsibilities:
Perform power system load flow, stability, and short circuit studies to assess the impact of the transmission connection projects, including but not limited to generation, load, distribution energy resources etc. Perform power system studies to assess transmission capability of ATCO’s system and evaluate options to support transmission capital maintenance plan. Work with the AESO, the market participant, and other stakeholders to develop connection strategies and mitigation plans to connect customer and system projects to the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System (AIES). Work with AESO to ensure proper development of project scope and Functional Specification for transmission projects. Perform studies to support application of capacitor banks, SVCs and other FACTS devices. Develop study reports, document results and recommendations with minimum revisions and communicate with AESO, the customer and other external/internal stakeholders as needed. Develop load flow base cases using PSS/E software. Update slider files on PSS/E. Prepare data submission packages for new and modified transmission facilities following appropriate AESO data submission requirements. Provide technical support to System Operations and other stakeholders by assessing the impact of transmission system projects when requested. Support the development and compliance of Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS).Qualifications:
Minimum Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering. Advanced degree is an asset. 3+ years of related experience is required. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation is required. A solid understanding of power system concepts and a good understanding of power system analytical techniques and various transmission/distribution equipment. Experienced with power system analysis programs such as PSS/E. Experience with PSCAD or EMTP-RV is an asset. Good interpersonal skills with strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated flexibility and capability to self-start. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and professionally in a dynamic environment while managing multiple demands and priorities.What We Offer:
