Transmission Planning Modeling Engineer (SR-Prin)

Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing complex engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives. **Job Description** **ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS FOR MODELLING ENGINEER:** **3 Modelling roles will be responsible for maintaining and updating the AEP Transmission load flow-system model which includes system connectivity, impedance calculation, and facility/equipment ratings.** + Accurately model transmission system topology including impedance and facility ratings for lines, generators, and transformers for Medium, High, and Extra High Voltages using AEP-internal modeling database, PSS/E, and/or ASPEN One-liner. + Fulfill various system modeling related requests from Engineering and Operations personnel and submitted via ServiceNow ticketing system. Collaborate with others internal/external to the team to model planned projects, build power flow, and short circuit model cases representing the future transmission system, as needed. + Participating in the planning and organization of project work activities. Perform electrical transmission system analysis and protection system studies, as requested. + Perform activities related to NERC Compliance standards. + Apply problem solving skills to resolve technical problems and initiate solution techniques. **ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS FOR REGIONAL ENGINEER:** **This Regional role will be responsible for performing reliability and economic transmission studies across PJM, SPP, ERCOT and MISO and for analyzing and reviewing generator bids for AEP acquisition.** + Accurately model transmission system topology including impedance and facility ratings for lines, generators, and transformers for Medium, High, and Extra High Voltages using AEP standards in PSS/E, PROMOD and/or ASPEN One-liner. + Review postings by SPP, PJM, MISO and ERCOT + Investigate violations within the electrical system to identify the underlying issues + Ideate and iterate solutions in competitive windows to generate projects aligned with AEP’s goals and strategy. + Respond to RFI’s from RTOs on a case-by-case basis. + Work with various engineering disciplines to better plan feasible projects. + Review data from integrated resource planning team in preparation for generation scoring efforts. **Preferred Job qualifications:** Demonstrated experience modeling transmission and generation system topology using ASPEN One-liner and/or Siemens PSSE, TARA, and/or PROMOD for Medium, High, and Extra High Voltages. Including: + O Modeling inverter-based generation for both wind and Solar applications + o Modeling synchronous based generation + o Modeling transmission lines, transformers, and circuit breakers + o Performing transmission system fault studies including circuit breaker duty analysis • Demonstrated experience working with PJM, SPP, ERCOT and/or MISO • Demonstrated experience of working with NERC Compliance Standards • Demonstrated experience with process improvement including process development, implementation, adherence, and training • Demonstrated experience comparing data from various sources, evaluating validity of data, and performing clean-up activities, as necessary. • Exhibits an understanding of economic planning concepts such as congestion, shadow pricing etc. • Exhibits a basic understanding of generator concepts such as curtailment, LMP ETC. • Exhibits a basic understanding of real-world constraints utilities run into and how to avoid them. **Requirements (by grade):** * **Note:** This vacancy is posted in a grade range. See “What We’re Looking For” for the basic qualifications for each grade. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:** **ENGINEER SR(GRADE 8)** **Salary Range- $96,110 - $124,940** Has typically acquired 6 or more years of related engineering experience along with a bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 4 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred.*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards. **ENGINEER PRIN(GRADE 9)** **Salary Range-($112,869- $146,7300)** Has typically acquired 8 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 6 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is required for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
