TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANT
Summary You will serve as a Transportation Assistant of NAVSUP FLT LOGISTICS CNTR SAN DIEGO. Responsibilities You will be responsible for the transportation duties consisting of making necessary arrangements for the movement of materials by all modes, using commercial and chartered carriers. You will be able to describe shipment with a broad classification, rate and routing range using appropriate terminology in order to secure best value transportation services and rates. You will consider all factors, including the required delivery dates, dimensions, classification of cargo and other sensitive hazards, for mode of transportation best suited for the type of cargo being shipped. You will receive guidance from supervisor when requirements conflict with mode of shipment regulations. You will coordinate the movement of over-dimensional freight with proper state and local authorities so freight can travel over public highways. At the GS-05, you will perform work as it is assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-05: You resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector following commercial rules, regulations, laws and procedures to govern movement of various types of material which could include personal property, hazardous material, and/or household goods. Examples of specialized experience may include the following: 1) Reviewing shipping costs to ensure charges are accurate with carrier rates; 2) Assisting in performing a wide range of personal property shipment management functions including material control, warehousing, household goods moves, and/or joint personal property offices; 3) Maintaining records, files and or reports; 4) Reviewing delivery requirements to book commercial trucks, planes, trains and/or other modes of transportation. GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector demonstrating knowledge of commercial rules, regulations, laws and procedures to govern movement of various types of material which could include personal property, hazardous material, and/or household goods. Examples of specialized experience should include some of the following: 1) Assisting with computing shipping costs in accordance with carrier rates; 2) Performing a wide range of personal property shipment management functions including material control, warehousing, household goods moves, and/or joint personal property offices; 3) Maintaining records and reports to identify discrepancies; 4) Reviewing delivery requirements to book commercial trucks, planes, trains and/or other modes of transportation.
