Summary You will serve as a Transportation Assistant in the Fleet Logistics Center San Diego (FLCSD) of NAVSUP FLT LOGISTICS CNTR SAN DIEGO. Responsibilities You will identify the mode(s) of transportation, necessary special equipment and services required for shipments, securing carriers, and advising customers on transportation issues. You will analyze material dimensions and weight to determine specific handling, packing, loading or type of carrier equipment required. You will serve serves as a freight shipping technical consultant and advisor, providing technical advice and administration of customer shipments. You will perform as technical advisor on transportation policy matters, providing liaison between military transportation, commercial carriers, customers, and tenant commands. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized Transportation Assistant experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service identifying the mode(s) of transportation, necessary special equipment and services required for shipments, securing carriers, and advising customers on transportation issues. Specific work experience must demonstrate the following duties: 1) Apply extensive and specific knowledge of transportation management policies, regulations, methods, principles, practices, and procedures related to the movement of a wide range of freight involving special shipments to include oversized, heavy, hazardous, classified, and security risk items; 2) Utilize knowledge of the carrier industry, specialized shipment needs, terminal or storage capabilities to identify appropriate shipping method, carrier equipment, services and special handling requirements; 3) Analyze, comprehend, and apply transportation rules and regulations to determine the appropriate mode of transportation consistent with the requirements of movement of a wide range of government freight; 4) Utilize in-depth knowledge of all areas of shipment management and specialized equipment requirements, classification of general cargo, and other sensitive hazards, for mode of transportation best suited for the type of cargo being shipped; 5) Prepare and review Application for Shipment and/or Storage, for member/employee and compiles all required documents for shipment; and 6) Explains shipment and storage options, including cost estimates, excess costs, and special procedures for shipments under various types of orders; e.g. approximate transit time, member/employee as well as Transportation Service Provider (TSP) responsibilities, and other information relevant to shipment and storage.
