Summary You will serve as a Transportation Assistant (OA) in the Material Management Branch/SUPSHIPS Newport News Integrated Logistics Support Division/Industrial Support Department of NAVSUP FLEET LOGISTICS CENTER NORFOLK. Responsibilities You will assist the transportation officer in taking appropriate action regarding the disposition and movement of government materials. You will ensure the coordination and movement of material that is subject to disposition during the ship construction process. You will determine the mode of transportation, including reviewing the size and weight of items in shipments to determine if a particular handling, packing, loading, or carrier equipment is required. You will prepare billing invoices or various shipment documents for commercial and governmental modes and carriers. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Transportation Assistance (Hazmat) specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector applying a body of standardized transportation regulations, procedures and operations, providing transportation assistance in support of work controlling and expediting delivery of Government Furnished Material GFM and Government furnished Equipment, and coordinating the delivery dates and freight compatibility with shipbuilders and contractors. Specialized experience must include a majority of the following: 1) Selecting modes or carriers, consolidating shipments, coordinating connections. 2) Must possess a knowledge of hazardous and/or dangerous handling procedures.3) Responding to inquiries and ensuring regulatory compliance throughout the movement process when moving a variety of high valued freight and commodities, classified materials and/or hazardous and dangerous commodities which require specialized handling. 4) Must possess proficiency in using a computer terminal and an automated transportation system and software to input, extract and create new files, reports and documents. Education As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
