The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in the College of Engineering at Utah State University (USU) is committed to excellence, access, and inclusion for all. We warmly invite applications from candidates of all backgrounds for our tenure-track (or tenured) academic year faculty position in Transportation Engineering. It is expected that the position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level; however, outstanding candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level will also be considered. The anticipated start date is August 2025.

 

For the faculty position, targeted areas of research and teaching within transportation engineering include, but are not limited to, the following: traffic operations, freight transportation or goods movement, public transportation systems, transportation electrification, transportation network modeling, connected and autonomous vehicles, and cyber-physical systems. An ideal candidate will possess interests and skills that complement existing departmental and institutional strengths—in transportation electrification, traveler behavior, active transportation, transportation data analysis and econometrics, transportation equity, infrastructure resilience, transportation planning, traffic safety, land use planning, and outdoor recreation—and contribute to addressing 21st-century transportation challenges related to infrastructure, sustainability, and societal impacts.

 

The CEE Department at USU benefits from affiliation with several transportation related centers, programs, and partners. The CEE department’s Utah Transportation Center has been a part of several University Transportation Centers funded by the US Department of Transportation, currently the Center for Transformative Infrastructure Preservation and Sustainability. USU houses the Utah Local Technical Assistance Program center for transportation technology transfer. A National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for transportation electrification—Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification (ASPIRE)—is headquartered at and led by USU. The Utah Department of Transportation is also a close research partner, having supported USU faculty with more than $1.5 million in research funding over the last 5 years.

 

The search committee will begin considering applications on November 1, 2024. For full consideration, applications should be submitted prior to that date; however, the position will remain open until filled. Responsibilities

Successful applicants will be expected to develop a high-quality program of research and scholarship that is consistently productive, sustainable, and nationally recognized for excellence. This includes forming interdisciplinary research collaborations (with other faculty in the CEE Department, the University, and elsewhere), obtaining extramural funding to support a vibrant research program, producing peer-reviewed publications and other impactful dissemination activities, and recruiting and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Candidates will also be expected to be an effective teacher at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to provide meaningful service to Utah State University, the citizens of Utah, and the profession.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Earned doctorate degree (prior to the position’s start date) in Civil Engineering or a field closely related to transportation.Demonstrated ability to conduct and disseminate research in transportation.Evidence of emerging research stream(s) and publications in transportation-related areas.Ability to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in fundamental areas related to transportation, and to develop graduate level courses in the candidate’s specific area of research emphasis, in accordance with departmental needs.Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of established and nationally-recognized research stream(s) and publications in transportation-related areas.Demonstrated ability to apply for and secure extramural funding to support scholarly activities.Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of colleagues.Experience attracting, supervising, and mentoring high-quality graduate and undergraduate research students.Experience teaching and working with students of different backgrounds.Licensed P.E. or ability to secure P.E. license Required Documents
