What you will be doing 

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 
• Provide superior service to retail stores. Set and monitor performance targets both the short and long term. 
• Hiring and development of staff and team members towards attainment of their potential.  
• Supervise up to 450 drivers, 25 mechanics and 70 warehouse workers and direct the workforce. 
• Oversee all product movement for the Distribution Center. Manage day to day operations to service the needs of retail stores within department budget. Coordinate transportation operations with Distribution Center Management and Warehouse Operations. 
• Determine and optimize the utilization of equipment and staffing in a dynamic environment for daily operational needs. 
• Provide a safe work environment for all employees. Ensure departmental compliance with OSHA. Keep abreast of Department of Transportation regulations; ensure all employees and equipment are in D.O.T. compliance. Interface with Regulatory Agencies. 
• Keep informed of Federal, State, and Municipal laws and regulations, collective bargaining agreements and company work rules regarding transportation and warehouse operation of company. Ensure Safeway policies, procedures and practices are strictly adhered to, including appropriate audit, controls and segregation of duties are in place to support Sarbanes Oxley compliance. 
• Manage labor relations by dealing with grievances, corporate, transportation and warehouse employees, and union business agents. Participate on the negotiating team in distribution center union contract negotiations. 
• Work closely with supervisors, hourly associates, drivers, Division DC’s, and retail personnel to implement cost saving measures. 
• Aggressively cultivate and promote a positive, engaged and innovative work environment.  
• Responsible for profit and loss of Transportation, Truck Repair and Asset Recovery Departments including employee costs, worker's compensation, equipment, and facilities. 
• Develop budgetary and departmental goals. Assist with Capital development, cost estimation and management as needed. 
• Execute and foster lean distribution and continuous improvement environment. 
 

The salary range is $ 81,000 - $98,000 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates. 

 
What we are searching for:  
• 4-year college degree preferred or 4-5 years progressive warehouse/transportations operations management experience. 
• 4-6 years management level experience in distribution. 
• Strong use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access and associated applications is strongly preferred. 
• Extensive knowledge of transportation related software including routing optimization software (Manugistics JDA); truck on-board computer software (XATA); dispatch software (CAMS). 
• Strong knowledge of warehouse management system EXE, COM. 
• Strong knowledge of Engineered Labor Standards. 
• Excellent customer service focus, results oriented. 
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. 
• Proven ability to hire, develop, evaluate, train, and coach a diverse staff and employees. 
• Experience in holding employees accountable for working safely, and providing a safe work environment. 
• Proven ability to define performance measures directly related to business and hold people accountable for such. 
• Excellent interpersonal, team building and communication skills, both written and oral. 
• Excellent organizational skills with a high degree of initiative and flexibility. 
• Proven track record of cost reduction and increased productivity. 
• Expert knowledge and experience in operating within the guidelines of DOT, OSHA, HEALTH DEPT. and other regulatory agencies. 
• Willingness to work flexible hours, weekends, swing and graveyard shifts and holidays required.
