The unit performs and oversees the execution, planning, design, analysis and coordination of landscape architectural work pertaining to transportation projects and programs, including roads, highways, bridges and transportation facilities. Among other related duties, the Landscape Design unit is responsible for: + The design of plantings, the pedestrian environment, and overall aesthetics on transportation projects ranging from transit stations, interstate systems, to historic Main Streets + Guidance of designers and communities through the complex changes associated with highway improvement projects including tree preservation + Developing and supporting the advancement of specifications for sustainable seeding and drainage, as well as the planning and implementation of forested buffers and urban canopies POSITION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must be available to travel for training, conferences, meetings, field reviews, etc. both within and outside of normal working hours, when necessary. A valid driver's license is required and must be maintained. Active Connecticut Landscape Architect licensure is required and must be maintained. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Two (2) years of experience as a licensed landscape architect in the execution, planning, design, analysis, and coordination of work pertaining to transportation programs and projects. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS + Experience managing and developing landscape architectural components of complex transportation projects including management of related scope, schedules, budgets, plans and quality control items + Experience leading, mentoring, assigning tasks and evaluating the performance of landscape designers + Experience overseeing consultant landscape designers and landscape architects in the development and delivery of landscape architectural components for transportation projects and quality assurance processes during construction + Experience in overseeing staff performing quality assurance inspections involving the installation of landscape architectural components for transportation projects + Experience coordinating effectively with other Department units, consultants, and stakeholder groups + Experience with relevant manuals, policies, procedures and design practices + Experience and technical expertise related to reforestation, landscape buffers, pollinator habitats, green infrastructure and invasive species management + Knowledge gained through education and/or experience, of horticulture, ecology, soil science, and best practices for planting and seeding + Experience using CTDOT’s Compass, Bluebeam, CADD and visualization tools + Experience with interpersonal skills, presentation skills and oral and written communication skills SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS + Incumbents must possess and retain a Landscape Architect licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Landscape Architects consistent with C.G.S. 20-372. + Incumbents in this class may be required to travel. + Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
