This posting will cover 2 positions in the Pender County Maintenance Unit: 60016977 & 60016972. Only one application is needed to be considered for both positions.
This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Pender County Maintenance Unit. Work is related to maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Pender County and supervision of subordinates in the maintenance and construction of highways. Applicants must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently, as needed. The position will supervise roadway maintenance crew working in and around heavy traffic, heavy equipment and with power tools. Responsibilities include supervision of roadway maintenance crew involved in drainage maintenance, patching, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal, and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. The selected applicant Must be able to install and maintain work zone control plans. Complete daily work reports and conduct daily tailgate meetings. Position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergencies and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

+ Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations
+ Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practice
+ Experience in planning work and supervising the daily activities of a work crew
Additional Expectations:
Work includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needs to complete assigned maintenance tasks. Employee is responsible for making appropriate adjustments to plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, attending training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state and federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (i.e.: traffic control and environmental stewardship). The employee must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Safety toe shoes required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of hire.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
