This position will serve as a Transportation Supervisor I in the Salisbury Bridge Maintenance Unit of Division 9. This position will function as a Transportation Supervisor for Rowan and Davie Counties. This position will supervise the activities of a bridge crew in structure replacement, rehabilitation, preservation, or maintenance activities relating bridges, culverts, and large diameter pipes. Duties will include review of establishing traffic control devices and installation per NCDOT requirements, conducting safety meetings, establishing erosion control devices, supervising steel or timber pile driving operations, dewatering, grouting of approach slabs, forming and placing concrete reinforced bridge elements, construction of structures per engineering layout, constructing footings & caps, pier installations, beam replacements, cleaning & painting steel (including lead abatement) inspection and evaluation of bridge structures. As well as excavation of foundations and replacement of bridge elements, inspection of contract work review of daily work assignments, completing daily work reports which includes documenting material inventory, and equipment usage and ensuring safety standards and policies are followed. This position is subject to emergency callback including snow and ice removal and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Position # 60026218. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies + Experience in maintenance & repair of State assets, as well as equipment operation in one of the following: Shoulder & ditch maintenance, pipe installation or repair, asphalt patching whether full depth or pothole, snow & ice removal, crack sealing, beam end repair/replacement, deck or superstructure or substructure spall repair + Experience supervising the work of others and directing the daily activities of a work crew + Experience in planning and organizing work + Experience in work zone safety and workplace safety policies + Experience in recordkeeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used Additional Expectations: The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Working safely is a condition of employment. Must be able to operate State vehicle and assigned equipment effectively. Ability to read and understand bridge, roadway, erosion control, and traffic control plans. Ability to do minor calculations, using basic mathematics. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions and maintain effective working relations with other employees. Ability to effectively plan and organize work. Position will be subject to emergency callback for situations that may occur after normal working hours. Physical activities required are standing, walking on uneven terrain, climbing, lifting minimum of 50 lbs., and speaking and hearing. Ability to work and be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volume of traffic, and heavy construction equipment.
