Salary Grade: NC14 Salary Range: $50,633.00 - $88,607.00 Internal Posting – Only Temporary or Permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply Located in the Whittier Bridge Maintenance Unit, this position supervises the activities of a bridge crew in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and replacement of bridges, culverts, and pipes. Responsibilities include supervising bridge crews, determining and scheduling daily work, and coordinating necessary labor, equipment, and materials to accomplish assigned tasks. Key activities include the maintenance, repair, and replacement of timber, concrete, and steel components (such as railings, decks, superstructures, substructures, joints, and trusses), as well as cleaning and painting steel and masonry walls. The position also involves overseeing the complete replacement of bridges and large-diameter pipes. Additional duties include preparing reports and forms, supervising daily tasks, reading and interpreting construction and repair plans, and monitoring and reviewing daily work assignments. The role requires adjusting project plans based on field conditions, ensuring safety standards are followed, and documenting material inventory and equipment usage. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Experience in bridge maintenance and repair, as well as bridge maintenance equipment operation + Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used + Experience in planning work and supervising a bridge crew + Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices + Experience inspecting bridges for minor maintenance needs Additional Expectations: Be available to work extended hours as required and be available for emergency call outs 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (N endorsement may be required). Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety Toe Shoes are required within 30 days of employment.
