The position will contribute to maintaining all facilities at the Davie Maintenance Unit including the main office, equipment sheds, material storage sheds, supply sheds, salt brine systems, asphalt tack storage systems, and others. Maintenance of facilities may include HVAC systems, plumbing systems, structural elements, electrical systems, and other factors. Position will be responsible for maintaining basic supply inventories, material stockpiles, and tool inventories to support maintenance operations. Position may also be required to make basic repairs on small engine equipment including chainsaws, weed-eaters, concrete saws, leaf blowers, and others. Position will be required to work during inclement weather events and on an on-call basis after hours. Position may be required to perform various roadway maintenance activities along with other maintenance personnel. Position will supervise inmate workers. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as, maintenance equipment operation + Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used + Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations + Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, snow and ice removal, crack sealing, full depth patching or pothole patching + Experience in planning and organizing work Additional Expectations: Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to, operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employees must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employees must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Positions are subject to emergency call back. Safety toe shoes required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of hire.
