Perform manual and equipment operational work in the maintenance of highways. Work includes installation of traffic and erosion control devices; operation of a variety of hand and power tools; clear right of way, repair pavements, assist with pipe installation or other drainage tasks; inventory materials, inspect contract work and monitor manual tasks performed by inmates. Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with 360 days to obtain a License or employment will be terminated. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Working knowledge of standard road maintenance, construction procedures + Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies + Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck w/aerial device + Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching Additional Expectations: Ability to operate a wide variety of on road and off-road construction equipment. Ability to operate hand tools, including but not limited to: chain saw, rake, bush axe, shovel, power tamp, concrete saw, and other items as necessary. Ability to perform various manual tasks as directed, associated with maintenance and repair of the highway system. This includes asphalt and/or concrete pavement maintenance, drainage ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation/replacement/repair, vegetation control, debris removal, and storm response. Ability to perform flagging operations and facilitate work zone traffic control, ranging from flagging to deploying work zone traffic control devices as appropriate by Department standards. Ability to respond to emergencies, including snow and ice, other maintenance emergencies. High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements: Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
