This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in the Haywood Bridge Maintenance Unit, involving manual and equipment work in maintaining and replacing bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. Responsibilities include using small hand tools, various power tools, carpentry tools, and chainsaws; placing and finishing concrete; operating two-way radios; and learning erosion control best practices. The role requires operating dump trucks, air compressors, forklifts, vibratory rollers, front end loaders, backhoes, lowboys, skid steers, excavators, and truck-mounted cranes, as well as rigging loads, tying reinforcing steel, and flagging operations.
Experience in pipe installation, drainage maintenance, carpentry work, concrete forming and layout, cutting and fitting structural steel, developing traffic control plans, installing erosion control devices, and transporting materials is essential. This labor-intensive position requires working in diverse environments in all weather conditions, around heavy traffic, heavy equipment, and power tools. The ability to work independently and in a team, lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and 50 lbs. frequently, and perform climbing, bending, and walking on uneven terrain is crucial.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
+ Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices
+ Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedure
+ Experience in operating at least two of the following: air compressor, forklift, dump truck, vibratory roller, compactor, front end loader, backhoe, tractor trailer, truck mounted crane, skid steer, excavator, lattice crane.
+ Experience constructing formwork (such as concrete forms for bridge repair, sidewalks, curbs, and other construction related formwork) using skilled carpentry techniques.
+ Experience repairing timber bridges such as railing, wheel guards, wing walls, decking, piles, joists, etc.
Additional Expectations:
The role requires a broad range of skills across various functional areas, including pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, and machine operation. Responsibilities include the repair and replacement of culverts, bridges, large diameter pipes, bulkheads, and pile clusters. Additional tasks involve sandblasting, lead paint removal, painting, steel fabrication, and straightening steel beams, as well as trenching, shoring, bushing, clearing and grubbing.
The position requires the ability to stand and walk on uneven terrain, climb, lift a minimum of 50 lbs., and communicate effectively. Candidates must not be afraid of heights and will be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, heavy traffic, and construction equipment.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire.
As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed.
Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employee will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic.
Additionally, candidates must be available for emergency call-back situations that may occur outside of normal working hours
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Education Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
