This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Catawba County. This position will report to the Catawba County Maintenance Office. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies + Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures + Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device) + Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching Additional Expectations: Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employee must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to50lbs repeatedly. Employee must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Pre-employment drug testing required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training, and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
