This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Walnut Cove Bridge Maintenance Unit. This position will perform manual & equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. This position will utilize working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures. Work will include a wide variety of skills utilized in the functional areas to include: pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, equipment operation, contract inspection, repair of bridges/culverts/large pipe & headwalls, sandblasting and painting, demolition work, trenching and shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication, straightening of steel beams, oxygen/acetylene cutting & electric ARC, MIG & TIG welding. Applicants should possess knowledge of work zone safety traffic control and flagging operations. Additional duties of this position will include Installation and maintenance of erosion control tasks will as assigned and supervised by a Transportation Supervisor. Working safely is a condition of employment. Operate State vehicle and assigned equipment effectively. Follow instructions to complete assigned tasks without supervision. Use of tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities. Physical activities required are standing, walking in uneven terrain, climbing, lifting a minimum of 50lbs., talking and hearing. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
