This posting represents two (2) Transportation Worker IV vacant positions located in Wilkes County Maintenance Unit in Division 11. Positions 60022142 and 60021825 will be filled from the same pool of applicants. All applicants will be considered for both (2) positions. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a lead person to the supervisor of a road maintenance crew. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces of equipment as needed on the various crews. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Must be able to train others in equipment operation as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation, manual tree and brush removal, debris and litter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt and salt brine application. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. These positions respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
