Trauma Education and Outreach Specialist-Full Time Days

Job Summary:
This position requires the combination of nursing knowledge and critical thinking skills to identify significant and/or unusual trends in trauma care. The primary focus of the position will be education, outreach, and injury/violence prevention. The Specialist is responsible for assisting the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager in the development, implementation and monitoring of trauma treatment and guidelines. Occasional weekend or evening speaking or education opportunities will be required.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Provides education to facilitate the continuity of trauma care from the pre-hospital arena to the Emergency Department, Operating Room, Critical Care units, acute care nursing units and ancillary departments.Works in collaboration with leadership and Trauma liaisons in assessing trauma education needs. Coordinates and facilitates the development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of a comprehensive education program to address care of the trauma patient.Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of educational and outreach programs within the hospital and trauma referral region.Uses the Trauma Registry to identify performance improvement opportunities, outreach opportunities, trauma prevention and education needs. Assists in the trauma performance improvement process by providing education on identified needs for improvement.Assists in the identification of practice variations and issues through chart review, observations, focused reviews, and interpretation of registry data. Assists with trauma registry data analysis for planning injury/violence prevention activities.Coordinates funding opportunities including reviewing and applying for grant opportunities. Collaborates with the MWHC Foundation to seek financial support for injury prevention and outreach activities. Collaborates with other health professionals, agencies, and organizations to develop, coordinate, market and evaluate internal and external injury prevention and outreach activities. Develops and maintains community partnerships to meet the educational needs of groups at risk for injury and violence.Maintains relationships with all regional facilities and emergency services agencies. Actively participates in EMS outreach and works collaboratively with the MWH EMS Coordinator and regional EMS council.Assists in daily operation of the Trauma Service, including the preparation of verification and reverification reviews by the Commonwealth of Virginia and ACS-COT.Trains, supervises, and or mentors other Trauma Program staff as directed by the leadership. Serves as a trauma resource to registered nurses and other Associates within Mary Washington Healthcare and in the community as appropriate.Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school required, Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred.Valid RN License from Virginia or reciprocal compact state required.TNCC & ENPC certification required within 1 year.Experience in trauma, critical care and/or Emergency Department experience that includes the care of trauma patients required.Experience in project design, implementation, management, and evaluation of education & prevention programs required.Experience with public speaking and oral and written presentation skills required.Proficiency in usage of basic computer operating systems, including email and Microsoft Office Suite required.
