Trauma Registrar Job Code: 621 Job Summary The Trauma Registrar is primarily responsible for all activities necessary for development and maintenance of the Munson Medical Center (MMC) Trauma Registry. This position may also provide clerical support to the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager, by typing procedures, letters, reports, minutes and assisting with the coordination of materials for presentations and educational and outreach activities specific to the trauma service at Munson Medical Center (MMC). Trauma Registrar for both Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital and Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. Will work with Cadillac registrar to cover all of South Region registry. Will also assist the trauma coordinator with injury prevention events, performance improvement, and creating reports with registry data.
Education and Experience EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Min/Preferred Education Level and/or Years of Experience Comments Required 2 Year / Associate Degree Associate’s degree in Health Record Technology or equivalent required; Preferred 4 Year / Bachelors Degree Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management Required 1 Experience using ICD-10-CM/ ICD-9-CM coding systems CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION Min/Preferred Certification, Licensure, Registration Comments Preferred Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Preferred Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Preferred Coding Specialist (CCS) Other RequirementsMust complete the American Trauma Society’s Trauma Registrar Course and the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Injury Scaling Course (C 15-7) within 12 months of hire. Key Competencies and Skills Demonstrated ability to meet productivity and quality standards is required. Previous abstracting experience is preferred. Previous experience with a computerized encoder system is preferred. Current ability to efficiently work with Windows and at least one major word processing program (1998 MS Word or better preferred). Must also have experience with at least one spreadsheet or database program i.e. Access or Excel or a recognized hospital data entry program i.e. APACHE, HTR, TRACS. Self-directed with excellent communications and problem-solving skills (evidence necessary to support communication skills i.e. references or past performance evaluations). Will be able to independently devise and verbalize methods for problem resolution. Will demonstrate qualities and work ethics that are consistent with the values of Munson Medical Center Essential Duties Acknowledges that safety is a self-responsibility. Plans actions to promote safety. Reports any unsafe situation/equipment according to Hospital procedure. Data abstraction and entry into the trauma registry. This includes identification of all reportable cases for inclusion in the registry from ER patient log. In addition, concurrent abstraction from in-house charts in coordination with the Trauma Coordinator and other Trauma Service Data Collection Assistants will be an expectation. Report generation for Trauma PI and all research activities related to the MMC Trauma population would be a routine function of the Registry role. Furthermore, membership and active participation in Michigan and local Trauma Registry Committees/Councils is an essential piece of this function. Performs clerical duties. This includes typing letters, reports, minutes, and procedures. Maintenance of Trauma manuals, mailing lists and logs is also included. Accurately codes medical information using AIS, ISS and where appropriate ICD-9-CM after obtaining appropriate training opportunities for maintenance of accurate ISS scores for the MMC Trauma Registry. May assist with development of PowerPoint presentations, lecture and presentation materials for Trauma Service educational and outreach activities. May include assistance with clerical activities for TNCC and ENPC courses. Development of data acquisition forms, charts, and reports from Access or Excel when necessary. Communicates with physicians to request clarification on a condition/procedure or to request the addition of same to enhance DRG reimbursement or the severity index or to be consistent with established guidelines.
