Compensation

Hourly base pay rate is $28.08 - $42.12/hour. The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission (annual, monthly, etc.) and/or an incentive program.

Job Description

The AJC’s mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news and information for the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. To achieve that mission, we are transforming ourselves from a storied daily newspaper into a modern media company. Where reporters, product ninjas, video/audio masters, digital gurus and many more are delivering work across diverse creative platforms, industries and borders.


The trending reporter creates quick-turn, must-share content for AJC.com that supports and leads the day’s newsroom efforts to engage and grow our audience. The ideal candidate is accurate, speedy, creative and confident with creating multimedia content across the arc of a news cycle, with a keen eye toward writing for SEO trends and other audience metrics. A top candidate has a good track record of collaborating across digital mediums, and are obsessed with finding the perfect headline and presentation of stories. Assignments could range from writing up a quick breaking news story, to recording an explainer with an influencer on a trend as it heats up, to compiling compelling guides, best-of and aggregation content for folks to live their best lives.

The trending reporter will work closely with programming team leaders and reporters and editors across the newsroom to produce stories that engage and grow our audience, and will be able to use audience data to help drive decision making. 

Specific duties include:

Writing original content on deadline, as assigned by editorsContributing and pitching creative ideas and angles to capitalize on audience opportunitiesUnderstanding digital content, how to frame it for social engagement, and how to measure its success

Qualifications:

This position requires a bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of directly relevant experience. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as master’s degree and up to 2 years of experience or 6 years’ experience in a related field without a degree.The ideal candidate will have strong teamwork, communication, and troubleshooting skills, as well as the ability to adapt quickly to an ever-changing environment.Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an understanding of news judgement and journalism ethics are of paramount importance.An ability to take constructive criticismPassion and belief in local, regional and statewide journalism and its role as a societal change agentFamiliarity and experience in using audience metricsReliable automobile transportation required.Reliable internet service for remote work environment required.Ability to work weekend and unusual hours as dictated by news events

*While this position allows hybrid work, it will be based in metro Atlanta and the reporter will be expected to be onsite in our Atlanta office at least one day a week. Some weekend and night work will be required.

Benefits

Employees are eligible to receive a minimum of sixteen hours of paid time off every month and seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year.
