Trio Academic Coordinator
“Classic” Upward Bound at UM is a federally-funded program supported by a 5 year competitive renewable grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO program. The goals of “Classic” Upward Bound at UMaine are to assist high school students who are income-eligible, would be first generation college students, and/or who meet academic high-risk criteria, to succeed in high school and to become college graduates. While the grant is new, UMaine hosted a “Classic” Upward Bound program from 1965-2012. The current grant serves students at the following high schools: Central (Corinth), Dexter, Foxcroft Academy, Penobscot Valley (Howland), Penquis Valley (Milo), Piscataquis Community (Guilford), and Sumner Memorial (Sullivan). The Academic Coordinator works closely with the Director of TRIO Upward Bound Programs, and will work collaboratively with Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science staff to plan and implement the program and achieve standardized program goals and objectives for the federal “Classic” grant. The Coordinator provides day-to-day oversight and coordination of programming and record keeping as well as direct service and support to students. Typical hiring range for this soft-money funded position is $45,000 to $50,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Qualifications: Required: + Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in educational administration, human services, education, or a related field + At least 5 years direct service experience with high school or college age youth and a demonstrated respect for adolescents. + And/or at least 5 years of successful experience in managing a similar academic support services project. + Must have a working knowledge of program and grant budget requirements and the program’s budget context + Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with students and /or individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, and cultural backgrounds similar to that of Upward Bound participants. + A current Criminal History Records Clearance (CHRC) endorsement through the Maine Department of Education, including fingerprinting through the Maine State Police. Preferred: + Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those faced by Upward Bound at UMaine students; + 5 or more years related work experience + Experience working in programs with objectives similar to Upward Bound at UMaine; + Experience with and demonstrated understanding of college admissions and financial aid processes for low-income students.
