Job Description:

Job Title: Refrigeration Mechanic

Department: Traffic

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function:

Inspects, diagnoses, and performs preventative maintenance on all semi-trailers and tractors, specifically focusing on repairs to reefer units.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Services reefer units, replaces worn or broken parts. 35%Repair refrigeration and electrical systems on reefers. 30%Performs preventive maintenance on trailers. 15%Conducts inspections on trailers to meet federal guidelines. 10%Maintains accurate record of work performed and parts used. 5%Performs tire work on equipment. 5%Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities: (These are considered occasional in nature)

Assists in recovery of accidents.Performs minor repairs to shop building and equipment.Responds to service calls on the road to repair breakdowns.Performs repairs to tractors when necessary.Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

Must be able to solve practical problems; several abstract and concrete variables.Must be able to do Arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.Must be able to interpret written work instructions; understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies orally or in writing.

Education and Experience:

High school plus trade school or equivalent experience. Courses or technical certification in refrigeration necessary. Type 2 air conditioning certification preferred. Valid CDL license required.

Over one year up to three years of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to perform very heavy work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Visual requirements include vision from 20 inches or less to 20 feet or more with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

The duties of this position are performed in a repair shop setting. There is exposure to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemical or solvents, and electrical shock. Some pressure to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects. Occasional travel and overtime is required.

Equipment Used to Perform Job:

Standard tools and equipment used for reefer maintenance and repair including Freon recycler and leak detector, vacuum pump, pressure gauges, service vehicle, and fork lift. Performs data entry on computerized inventory system. Must have own hand tools. Welder, cutting torch and fluke meter. Telephone service vehicle.

Failure to perform job duties correctly could cause damaged equipment with a tractor and trailer combination valued at $70,000 - $100,000.
