Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Model Maker – Machinist/Fabricator A to join its team in Linthicum, Maryland.

Primary Function:

Plan and perform all machining, fabricating and assembly operations to produce first models of complex mechanical units, utilizing latest available program and/or non-program methods for a variety of machines. Make complete any necessary holding or locating fixtures or tools as required. Coordinate the various operations necessary to produce the model complete.

WORKING PROCEDURE AND/OR RESPONSIBILITY ASSIGNED:

PERFORM WORK OF EQUAL OR LOWER SKILL LEVEL AS REQUIRED.

Perform duties of lower classified Model Maker – Machinist/Fabricator B and in addition:

Responsible for the determination and planning of all machining, fabricating and assembly operations necessary to produce complete first models of complex mechanical units. Work from sketches or verbal information when drawings are not available and interpret the general ideas of the engineer when necessary in case of incomplete information on drawings and sketches.

Determine, plan and coordinate the various operations necessary to produce models complete requiring a general overall knowledge of all program and/or non-program machining, fabricating and assembly methods and tools. Set-up and operate with expert skill all machine tools and fabricating equipment such as milling machines, lathes, jig borers, grinders, shapers, drill presses, ultrasonic machine tools, shears, punch presses, and the like to machine and/or fabricate component parts fir the model complete. Plan, sketch and make complete any necessary holding or locating fixtures or tools which may be required.

Under guidance and assistance of higher classified Model Development Lab personnel, complete operational sequence program sheet providing step-by-step coded information necessary to control all programmed machines.

Perform all final mechanical assembly, fitting, aligning and adjustment to make model complete and to obtain proper mechanical operation. Make the mechanical test equipment of a temporary nature working from the general ideas of the engineer and test the mechanical operation on the model under the general direction of the engineer.

Install the models in airborne shipborne and/or land based vehicles, including necessary modifications to the vehicles working from drawings and verbal information.

Improvise the machining and the fabricating of component parts in the absence of the complete information or regular equipment. Work with engineer in developing unit and in making changes which will improve the unit or eliminate manufacturing difficulties. Responsible for the proper mechanical operation of the model when completed.

Maintain equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.

This is an SEA Union represented position.

This is a 1st Shift position (Start time: 8:30 AM).

Education requirement:

High school graduate or the equivalent with machine shop training and satisfactory completion of course in geometry.

Experience requirement:

Two years as lower classified Model Maker – Machinist/Fabricator B or seven years outside experience in related machine shop operations.
