General Summary:
The summer internship program will provide hands on experience in healthcare infection prevention and control, surveillance and infectious disease epidemiology, and antimicrobial stewardship programs. Interns will conduct healthcare surveillance in intensive care and general inpatient medical units settings. Job Title: Infection Prevention & Control Summer Intern
Department: Infection Prevention & Control Services (IPCS)
I. Epidemiologic Methods:
Utilize computer-based software, electronic information systems, potential error reporting systems, etc., to identify laboratory findings, analyze antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, and to assist with identification of HAIs or identify other possible safety problems. Design, collect, analyze, manage and report findings from surveillance to evaluate policies, estimate incidence, and to investigate outbreaks. Ability to perform a facility and population risk assessment
II. Performance Improvement, Education & Communication:
Evaluates policies, procedures, and work practices that are consistent with scientific evidence and/or guidelines – as applicable- and which are based on risk assessment for the overall goals of the Infection Prevention and/or Antimicrobial Stewardship programs. Assist with integration and collaboration of infection prevention and/or antimicrobial stewardship programs with overall patient safety / performance improvement program. Effectively communicate both in oral and written formats. Assist with consultation and or education for healthcare personnel on potential and identified infection control problems.
III. Other
Ability to work independently and as part of a team Apply critical thinking skills, risk assessment, and scientific evidence to enhance infection prevention and patient care practices.
Reporting Relationship & Supervision:
This position reports to the Medical Director of Infection Prevention & Control Services(IPCS) and Antimicrobial Stewardship and Supervision and Administrative Director of IPCS.
