Job Description

NREL's buildings research is transforming energy through building science and integration. Our research significantly enhances the resiliency, efficiency, and affordability of energy systems across the United States and the world.

 

NREL’s intern program provides a diverse opportunity for students and recent graduates. In addition to mentorship and real-world, hands-on experience, students and recent graduates will participate in professional development activities that will help strengthen their technical and professional skills. 

 

The internship commitment is 15-30 hours per week during the school year (depending on intern availability), and 40 hours per week during the summer. In this internship, the student will support technical work in energy efficiency in buildings, specifically Smart Labs. 

 

Duties may include supporting full-time technical staff in writing technical reports, assisting in the organization of conferences and events, and developing communications to partners. Additional duties may include supporting cross-functional teams in conducting thorough, high-quality research and analysis; project development and deployment; writing technical reports; and assessments of industry trends.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a desire to deepen knowledge in clean energy topics. Exceptional teaming, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills as well as the ability to work independently and problem solve are also required.

Basic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution. 

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.


Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution. 

Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,800 - $55,700

Benefits SummaryBenefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.

Intern assignments extending beyond six months will be subject to this requirement.
