Job Description

Seeking full- or part-time graduate or highly qualified undergraduate interns to work with researchers in NREL’s Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences on database development, data processing, and dashboard development to support analysis of mobility trends and energy implications of emerging transportation technologies. Specific job duties may include but are not limited to:

Assist NREL researchers on projects providing insights into transportation energy systems, with a focus on how emerging transportation systems impact travel behavior, quality of life, and energy use.Work with and analyze large quantities of real-world travel activity and vehicle driving data, and potentially leverage high-performance computing resources for larger scale analyses.Work with existing Generalized Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data as well as develop/enhance an existing codebase that modifies GTFS data.Quantifying and visualizing Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) and impacts on MEP from emerging transportation technologies and paradigms such as vehicle automation, electrification and sharing.Deliver quality products that synthesize external literature, data analyses, and modeling results. Document methods and assumptions and assist with preparing peer-reviewed publications along with high-quality technical reports and presentations.

This is a 3–12-month opportunity. The successful intern will be able to work at least a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Basic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.


Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications

Highest priority preferred qualifications:

Demonstrated programming experience in Python and R. Experience with R Shiny and/or JavaScript preferred. Demonstrated experience in traffic microsimulation using software such as SUMO, Aimsun, or Vissim.Familiarity with data visualization techniques.Familiarity with PostgreSQL and database administration.Familiarity with GTFS data.Knowledge in access theory and accessibility metrics.Familiarity with linear programming

Additional preferred qualifications:

Experience with data analytics, big data management, scraping data off the web, high-performance/distributed computing, machine learning and/or deep learning.Knowledge with supply chain optimization for alternative fuelsStrong writing and presentation skills.Experience with collaborative software development and use of Git/GitHub for project management and version control.Cumulative undergraduate/graduate GPA over 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
