The Assistant Specialty Medical Director (ASMD) for the Urgent Care Division at Atrium Health is a patient-centered, system-oriented physician leader responsible for overseeing the clinical performance of the Urgent Care float team and ensuring high-quality patient care across multiple locations. This position will serve as a leader, mentor, and supervisor to Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and physicians while also contributing to strategic initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and provider engagement.

The ASMD will hold a 0.4 FTE leadership role and a 0.6 FTE clinical role, meaning they will actively practice as part of the Urgent Care Float Team while simultaneously managing and supporting both the Float Team Providers and North Region Providers.

Provide oversight for the Urgent Care float team, including physicians and APPs, ensuring compliance with quality and performance metrics. Represent provider perspectives, questions, and concerns within Atrium Health leadership discussions. Serve as an integral, highly collaborative, and proactive member of the Urgent Care Advisory Council (UCAC), working alongside other ASMDs within the division.

Lead and support system-wide initiatives in Clinical Quality/Safety, Patient Experience & Service Excellence, Access & Productivity, Cost Effectiveness & Utilization, and Provider Engagement. Identify site-based operational challenges, develop solutions, and communicate necessary changes to the Specialty Medical Director. Conduct quarterly reviews of performance standards, goals, and metrics for physicians and APPs in their region.

Physician Recruitment & Orientation

Actively participate in the recruitment process for Urgent Care physicians and APPs, serving as a key resource for practice affiliation discussions. Assist in the assimilation of new physicians and APPs into the system.

Strategic Initiatives & System Engagement

Drive organizational growth by engaging in goal setting, performance monitoring, and strategic initiatives to enhance the Urgent Care service line. Collaborate with leadership on integrated system care models, strategic growth plans, efficiency initiatives, EMR updates, and other clinical imperatives. Participate in Atrium Health system-wide committees to align Urgent Care practices with broader organizational goals.

Interview & Hiring Process

The ASMD will be involved in recruitment, screening, and hiring of Urgent Care team members. The role allows flexibility in structuring interviews—whether through a single-stage virtual process followed by an on-site visit, or multiple interview rounds as deemed necessary. The hiring process may include shadowing sessions, practice site visits, and structured evaluations before making final hiring decisions.
