US Municipal Finance Reporter
Bloomberg News is looking for a reporter to help cover the $4 trillion US state and local government debt market and the financial health of its more than 50,000 borrowers. You will be responsible for breaking news on the borrowings of states, cities and government agencies and produce impactful narratives on the fiscal issues facing local governments and the repercussions for the broader economy. The financial health of municipalities is facing an extraordinary test as federal stimulus aid doled out during the height of the coronavirus pandemic is set to run out in the coming months, an action that will pressure budgets and threaten a fiscal cliff for public and private borrowers alike. Bloomberg News leads the coverage of these strains and the repercussions for public finance borrowers from colleges to school districts to transit agencies.

We're seeking a versatile reporter who can break news on state and local finances and deliver impactful features on the muni-beat as part of a collaborative team that sits at the intersection of markets, politics and national issues.

A successful candidate will have experience covering credit markets, a solid track record of delivering scoops on their beat and a good understanding of how money flows between governments and Wall Street. Candidates who have experience covering not-for-profit institutions like colleges and hospitals would be preferred. Experience covering wealth, economics and/or education would be a plus. As would be experience handling large data sets.

You’ll find opportunities to produce stories on public finance that readers can't get anywhere else and deliver them across Bloomberg’s growing number of platforms, including Bloomberg TV and Radio, Bloomberg’s Markets and Businessweek magazines as well as in podcasts, on QuickTake and in working with our data visualization team.

We'll trust you to: Break news on deals across the municipal-bond market while spotting new trends and connecting the dots to craft insightful, agenda-setting enterprise storiesDevelop and utilize your contacts among public officials, municipal-bond bankers, underwriters and investors to help Bloomberg chronicle the trends in the muni-bond market and financial health of states and citiesCollaborate with colleagues across teams, bureaus and countries to break news and deliver a global perspective to our readersBe innovative and think creatively about ways to make our content accessible to a broader audience of business-savvy readersYou'll need to have: At least four years of previous experience in financial or national journalismAbility to write quickly and clearly under deadline pressureAbility to spot trends, find holes in stories and work with colleagues to deliver impactful news to our readersAbility to work well within a team and other groups across the NewsroomWe'd like to see: Experience covering municipal bonds, government finances or not-for-profit institutions  Salary Range = 90000 - 120000 USD Annually + Benefits + Bonus
The referenced salary range is based on the Company's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
