UTMB Professional Student Nurse

Job Description:

The professional student nurse is a senior-level nursing student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate degree nursing program. Under the guidance and supervision of the clinical instructor, preceptor, or registered nurse employed by the facility, the student nurse is accountable for supporting patient care activities.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Monitors and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure, blood glucose testing, and other vital signs to detect variances from normal and reports changes in the status of patients to registered nurse staff. Assists with activities of daily living, personal hygiene, and physical care needs. Assists in admissions, transfer, and discharge process; performs and documents general therapeutic measures; performs unit housekeeping needs as delegated. Utilizes hospital computerized systems according to hospital policy dependent on the needs of the unit. Observes patients, and records responses to medication and treatments, reactions, and significant occurrences. Reports change to registered nurse staff. Identifies the need for and carries out health teaching and assesses health/illness practices and the influence of the environment on health status. Provides direct patient care under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. Monitors and documents patient conditions, and reports findings, and abnormalities to a registered nurse. Provides input for plan of care and assists Registered Nurses in determining healthcare needs. Demonstrates commitment to personal growth and development by completing annual mandatory training, and attending unit-based in-services and departmental meetings. Is responsible for assuring that activities performed do not exceed his/her skill level and scope of responsibility. Seeks out and participates in available learning opportunities.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of 2 semesters of an accredited baccalaureate degree nursing program and currently enrolled in nursing school.

 

License, Registrations or Certifications Required:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

 

Working Environment/Equipment:

Work environment is located in a comfortable indoor area. Conditions such as noise, odors, cramped workspace and/or fumes could sometimes cause discomfort. Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required, such as walking, standing, squatting, reaching, pushing, puling, performing CPR and lifting materials, equipment, objects and/or patients. Lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs. Vision, hearing, talking and sense of touch abilities must be adequate to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate oral and written communication. Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory and sensory inputs. Shift work may be required. Alertness and careful attention to detail will be required to avoid injury. May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, ionizing & non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications and disoriented or combative patients or others. May be required to be on standby and work extended shifts in situations deemed necessary by the Chief Nursing Officer, Nursing Director and/or Nurse Manager.

 

Standard patient care supplies, equipment, assistive patient lift/transport devices and mechanical devices for a selected patient population. Standard hospital-related office equipment. Show competency in point of care testing (POCT) and quality requirements.
