The Digital Channels team works on dynamic new projects and product enhancements within the web and mobile platforms in order to improve business inefficiencies, gain competitive advantage on our products and ultimately to provide better service to our clients. Using knowledge of the organisation’s technology infrastructure and specific software applications, Digital Channels helps the business to address changes through technologies.

 

Key Purpose

To ensure that Discovery digital features and channels meet the needs of their intended audiences through design, analysis, evaluation and testing of the user experience. Designs and conducts analysis and evaluations of systems interfaces with clients and staff, to ensure maximum usefulness and satisfaction, to increase productivity and to elevate the overall quality of the product or service. 

 

Job Summary

The UX/UI Designer will be responsible for building and maintaining design system components, ensuring consistency and quality across all digital projects. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement and enhance the design system, leveraging AI and emerging technologies to streamline design processes.

In addition to maintaining the design system, the individual will also engage in actual product design, contributing to the creation and improvement of digital products. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in design, proficiency in Figma, and a foundational understanding of UX research and usability analysis. They will play a crucial role in creating responsive components and enhancing the overall user experience of Discovery’s digital channels.

 

Areas of responsibility may include but not limited to

Maintain and Evolve Design System: Regularly update and refine the design system to ensure it meets the needs of various projects and teams. Manage Figma Libraries: Oversee the organisation and maintenance of component libraries in Figma, ensuring they are up-to-date and accessible to all designers. Centralise Guidelines: Consolidate design guidelines and best practices, making them easily accessible and understandable for the entire design team. Ensure Consistency: Work closely with product designers to ensure design consistency across all products and platforms. Create Responsive Components: Design and develop responsive components, understanding and applying the rules of responsive design to ensure usability across different devices and screen sizes. Collaborate with Teams: Partner with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure the design system is effectively implemented and utilised. Document Processes: Create and maintain documentation for the design system, including usage guidelines, component specifications, and design principles. Stay Updated: Keep abreast of the latest design trends, tools, and technologies to continuously improve the design system. Conduct User Research and Usability Analysis: Have proficient knowledge and experience facilitating and utilising user research. Interactive and Visual Design Prototypes: Create interactive and visual design prototypes ranging from low to high design fidelity. Conduct Peer Reviews: Conduct peer reviews of usability deliverables. Platform and Device Requirements: Have a good understanding of platform, browser and device compatibility such as form factors, screen resolutions and aspect ratios. Contribute to Training and Community Forums: Contribute to internal training and community forums with UX/UI Designers to broaden awareness of user experience and design best practices. Leverage AI and emerging technologies: Utilise AI and emerging technologies to enhance the design system and improve design processes.

 

Personal Attributes and Skills

Be comfortable providing and receiving constructive critique. Possess strong verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable communicating and presenting to business stakeholders using storytelling techniques. Proficient in UX research, interaction design, user-centred experience design, brand identity management, digital marketing and the creative process.  Have visual design skills; attention to detail and a demonstrated mastery of typography, colour and layout.  Experience and understanding of lean and agile processes.  Proficient with design tools such as Figma.  Be able to stand by your designs and provide solid rationale to back up design decisions made.  Ability to use prototyping tools to convey design intent.  Operational understanding of Accessibility and the ability to incorporate accessibility into designs. Data analysis and reporting.  Customer service orientation, result orientation, negotiation skills.  Personal organisation and time management skills.  Ability to build relationships with people from all different backgrounds and at different job levels.     

 

Education and Experience

3 to 5 years minimum relevant working experience. Experience in UX/Interaction design specifically for web and mobile applications/platforms preferred. Experience in building and maintaining a design system. A portfolio of work demonstrating a proven track record for solving difficult UX design problems and simplifying difficult requirements to intuitive interfaces for customers. Matric/Grade 12 and relevant Bachelor's or equivalent 3 year degree.  A track record of outstanding academic qualifications and professional performance.
