The Visual Arts Center (VAC) is a 13,000 square-foot gallery situated in the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. Our mission is to provide a platform for artists, curators, and educators to experiment, test ideas, and take risks. Through our exhibitions and public programs, we aim to spark generative conversations about art and contemporary society. We believe art has the potential to unite, inform, and inspire us to take action toward creating a more just world.

Purpose

The gallery and education liaison supports, creates, and leads educational initiatives at the VAC and works directly with gallery attendants to ensure a friendly and safe visitor experience.

Responsibilities

Oversee VAC daily operations, including opening, closing, and daily maintenance of exhibitions

Work with VAC director to hire, schedule, train, and supervise student gallery staff during regular visiting hours, installation periods, and special events

Coordinate requests and access to galleries for UT faculty, students, staff, donors, and the public during and outside regular visiting hours

Maintain gallery staff handbook, updating handbook regularly with information pertaining to general policies and procedures, exhibition-specific procedures, daily/weekly schedules, staff contact information, exhibition-related content, etc.

Work with the director and chief preparator to maintain the VAC installation calendar and communicate installation schedule and policies to artists, students, faculty, and student gallery staff

Maintain VAC tour calendar and share regular updates about tours and events with gallery staff. Coordinate and manage tour groups as needed

Develop and lead exhibition-based tours or educational activities, such as workshops and other events, in dialogue with the VAC director and assistant curator

Provide logistical support for in-gallery events and programs

Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in art or related program and one year of relevant experience

Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Works effectively within a team

Able to multitask and prioritize duties

Demonstrated professional demeanor and personal initiative

Promotes a collaborative climate that recognizes, celebrates, and rewards all perspectives

Ability to maintain a flexible and varying work schedule, including some evening and weekend hours

Preferred Qualifications

General museum or cultural institution experience

Background in education and interest in arts/cultural management, art education,

art history, or related field

Familiarity with the Visual Arts Center’s mission and programming

One year of managerial experience in a museum/gallery setting

Salary Range

$18,000 - $19,000 (20 hours/week. End 05/15/25), depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

This role offers a blend of both desk-based tasks and active, on-your-feet responsibilities.

This position is 100% on campus.
