Advises Regional VA Teams with up to 8 Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).  Provides advice and mentoring to Investment Managers and Regional Senior Leadership Teams across the organization.

Purpose

 

The VA Lead manages the VA Review process for each major Investment reviewed by IVM.  The VA Lead has multiple roles, including leading VA reviews for major development Investments, overseeing Regional VA implementation and processes through the Regional Liaison role, as well as participating as a VA SME on Reviews led by other Corporate VA Team members.  VA Reviews cover a diverse portfolio of  40 to 50 major Capital Projects annually totaling approximately $2 to $10 billion in Investment dollars.

Roles and Responsibilities include:

 

Managing the VA Review Process in support of increasing business and technical accumen across Newmont through interactions with Investment Teams and Regional Leadership. Leading VA Reviews in support of the Investment System mission focused on making Newmont an industry leader in terms of return, cost and time to implement investments. Managing the execution of VA Reviews utilizing a team of highly experienced, broadly knowledgeable experts to assess proposed Investments in order to form an independent opinion on the “readiness to proceed” to the next stage of evaluation or execution and strategic fit. Providing confidence to Newmont’s Investment Council (IC) through VAR Summary Reports that Investment Teams have appropriately evaluated the Business Case and strategic fit of Investment options as well as adequately completed all necessary technical development work. Coordinating and ensuring Regional Value Assurnace Teams, reviews and processes are implemented and meet fit to purpose content and quality standards.

Essential Duties

 

Corporate Value Assurance Team

Lead or participate in VA Reviews that provide recommendations, conditions, risks, opportunities, and gaps identified during the VA Review process to Investment Teams, Senior Regional Leadership, Vice President of IVM and the IC.  Outputs may be used by Regional Leaders in order to enable their understanding of their Investment Pipeline as well as to assist in their regional IC processes. Drive continuous improvement to increase efficiency and work product quality for the Investment System and within the VA Team by updating standards and requirements, incorporating feedback from Investment Teams and the IC and set performance goals.  Ensure VA performance metrics are utilized in work products, Team development and organizational design as needed. Mentor VA SMEs and ensure Team development and succession planning is in place and executed globally.

 

Regional, Project Services and Technical Services Interactions

Ensure VA Review Teams are appropriately resourced utilizing qualified selected Corproate / Regional VA members, Technical Services, Regions and external contractors ( e.g. Technical, Economic, Commercial, Operations, Political / S&ER, etc.). Engage with Project Services and Regional Leadership to ensure timely and thorough execution of End of Execution Reviews (EERs) and  VA Reviews of Post Investment Reviews (PIRs).

 

VA Liaison

Mentor and coach Regional IVM Manager to ensure Regional VA Reviews are meeting an expected high quality level and build bench strength. Provide leadership by proactively engaging and communicating with the Regional IVM Teams on VA processes and requirements, and coordinate VA related work efforts and timing between Corporate and Regional Teams. 

 

Other

Ensure VA work products and reports meet quality and content requirements and standards, including selected audits of Regional VA work products and reviews. Ensure IVM Standards and Guidelines as they pertain to VA are reviewed and updated on a timely basis, including maintenance of core tools, process and templates for efficient and effective VA reviews at all levels of the organization. Ensure Lessons Learned are incorporated in VA Reviews and transferred globally through interactions with Corproate, Regional and Execution Teams. Support the Investment Office in providing IVM and VA training to regional, functional, and project teams as required.

Training & Experience

 

Deep Technical Expertise and Depth

Techncial (B.S.) or Business (B.A.) degree required, Masters (M.S., M.B.A) or more advanced degree desirable.  Deep expertise in at least one technical area related to mining as well as strong business acumen and additional expertise in a broad range of technical disciplines relevant to mining project development.  This additional experience would include mining, geology, environmental, early works, site infrastructure, processing plant, tailings, estimation, schedule management, etc. >20 years mining industry related experience expected with significant mining operations and related project development experience desirable. Extensive project delivery experience across all stages of project execution, including non-mineral based investments. Significant experience with Newmont’s Invesment System processes and methods; experience with external investment evaluation processes desirable. Sophisticated understanding of project economics, economic models and fiscal risk management. Able to integrate across all technical and non-technical aspects of project execution and ensure focus on most important drivers of project success and recognize any potential fatal flaws and/or risks. Must be able to travel internationally without constraints other than normal legal or jurisdictional requirements and within Newmont travel policies and guidelines.

Seen as an Investment System champion among peers and project teams. Will build support, ownership and commitment for rigorous application of the Investment System across all levels of Newmont organization. Capable of embedding rigorous Investment System and VA processes within Newmont culture. Experienced in rolling out new tools, processes and capabilities across a corporate organization.

Senior leader recognized or deep expertise and experience. Seen as independent and objective, willing to bring difficult news to light when necessary. Able to build coherent and well functioning, cross-disciplinary teams, as well as being able to be a positive, contributing team member. Working Conditions

 

Position is located at the Corporate Office in Denver. Position is required to travel (up to 30% of time) to assist domestic and international sites. Position may require travel to remote or underdeveloped sites and locations.
