SUMMARY:


Proof of US citizenship, nationality, and/or permanent resident status in order to comply with all applicable export and import laws and regulations.

Efficiently operate and maintain the VAR Furnace(s) and associated pre-melt and post melt equipment to meet productivity and quality targets.  Interpret and respond to the needs of the equipment.  Perform skilled maintenance, set-up and troubleshooting functions as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Follow standard manufacturing and operating procedures. Strong learning aptitude required 75% of the knowledge required must be learned on the job.
Perform pre-operative checks prior to and during pump down cycle. Use pre-pump and startup checklist.
Set up and operate the equipment furnace(s) as directed for melting to include:
Inspecting and preparing electrodes for melting
Welding stubs on to electrodes
Clean, paint and maintain crucibles and base plates.
Loading electrodes
Operating the stub welder
Operating vacuum systems
Operating furnace controls and instrumentation
Melting ingots
Cooling, unloading, identifying and weighing ingots.
Drilling ingots (sampling)
Chamfering ingots
Band saw cut stubs and electrodes.
Must be able to interpret video monitors, gauges, meters, etc. while operating the VAR furnace(s) and stub welder.
Maintain operating records and logs.
Maintain material and maintenance needed lists.
Perform leak-up rate tests to determine vacuum integrity.
Clean out furnaces and crucibles during maintenance cycles and replace damaged components. 
Operate leak detectors.
Use various hand and power tools as directed.
Performs maintenance required to ensure good operating condition of furnace(s) and auxiliary equipment such as electrical, electronic, vacuum, hydraulic, pneumatic and cooling systems.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support other departments as needed per production demands.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED or equivalent is required; Trade school or additional training preferred.
3 years working experience in a relevant environment preferred.
Must be mechanically inclined and possess basic math skills.
Must be good at following instructions. 
Must be capable of working in a group.
Must be able to work any schedule, holidays and weekends.
Ability to lift objects up to 35 pounds.
Ability to work with heavy rigging, piping.  Forklift, crane-operating experience highly preferred.
Must be able to think quickly and take action.
Must be able to wear a respirator.
Ability to work in confined spaces.
Strong learning aptitude required.


ADDITIONAL NOTES:
To progress to the next grade level employee must fulfill the progressive requirements of previous levels and there must be an open position.  Employee must be in good standing, active participation in Risk Notification, 6S, Safety activities, works weekends, holidays and overtime based on the needs of the department.

Melt Operator I:
High school diploma/GED or equivalent is required. 
Two years technical degree or certificate (Electronic, Mechanical or Welding).       
       OR 18 months of successfully demonstrated skills experience (Electronic, Mechanical or Welding) and completed skills testing.

Melt Operator II:
Meet the requirements of Melt Operator 1 with a min. of 3 years melt experience and evidence of exemplary job performance. 

Melt Operator III:
Has fulfilled progressive requirements of previous MO level with a min. of 5 years melt experience and evidence of exemplary job performance.  Successfully performed as a fill-In lead

Melt Operator IV:
Has fulfilled progressive requirements of previous MO levels.  Successful completion of Lead Operator OJT, Lead Operator certification, and a minimum of 8 years melt experience. Performs consistently at an exemplary level as an experienced Operator.
