Desired Start Date Position End Date (if temporary) To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by 11:59pm (MT) on10/10/2024 Description of Work Unit The Colorado Natural Heritage Program ( CNHP ) is Colorado’s primary biological conservation information center housed within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. CNHP is a key player in Colorado’s conservation of open lands and maintains the only centralized conservation database in Colorado that includes plants, animals, and natural communities. The staff consists of approximately 30 highly experienced biologists and information managers with expertise in inventory, research, and monitoring of Colorado’s flora, fauna, plant communities, and conservation issues. CNHP serves a wide variety of users including federal, state and local agencies, consultants, environmental groups, non-government organizations, private landowners, and the public. CNHP’s annual revenue is approximately 2 million dollars and is generated from contracts and agreements through CNHP’s partners and clients. Position Summary A Vegetation and Pollinator Inventory Research Scientist position is available with Colorado State University and the Colorado Natural Heritage Program to be located in Fort Collins, Colorado. The incumbent of this position serves as a project manager for the inventorying of natural resources (specifically vegetation and pollinator species) where many parks lack sufficient scientific staff to collect, manage, and synthesize scientific information needed to manage park ecosystems. The incumbent typically works on multiple projects and interdisciplinary project teams at any given time, frequently serving as the designated project manager. The incumbent assists with the development and implementation of an intricate program of natural resource inventorying and related activities including data and information management, analysis, reporting and outreach to address sensitive and complex resource management needs that are affected by a wide variety of issues within and outside the parks. This position has potential to be fully remote. Required Job Qualifications + Master’s degree with 2 years of experience in the inventorying of natural resources (specifically vegetation and pollinator species). + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. + Expertise in pollinator field methods for lethal and non-lethal collections (evidence by experience in the field). + Experience developing science communication products for the NPS Inventory program. + Mastery of scientific inventory project principles and research techniques. + Ability to manage long-term projects designed to inventory natural resources at NPS park units across multiple parks. + Ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and provide leadership to a team of interns, scientists, data managers, and technical specialists in all phases of complex, multi-year projects of various spatial scales. + Knowledge of the Endangered Species Act, NPS Management Polices, and the laws pertaining to ESA listed species. + Ability to prepare reports and journal articles of high scientific credibility, and to share pertinent information effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. + Ability to make oral presentations that are well designed, informative, and clearly convey the intended message. Preferred Job Qualifications + Preferred education is an advanced degree in biology, environmental science, or closely related science. + At least one year of experience with natural resource management on National Park or public lands. + Knowledge of natural resource-related Department of Interior – National Park Service Management Policies (2006) and service-specific manuals, instructions, and/or directors orders. + Proven ability to supervise and create science communication products from pollinator inventory projects and disseminate appropriately, including relevant web articles summarizing inventory projects. + Thorough understanding of laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines related to NPS natural resource inventory and monitoring and the protection of the nation’s natural and cultural resources. + Skill in oral and written communication in order to ensure that plans are well written and easily understood. Essential Duties Job Duty CategoryScience program development, implementation and support Duty/Responsibility + Vegetation and Pollinator Inventory project management includes: ensuring that project proposals submitted by park units for funding meet the established criteria for a vegetation and pollinator inventory project. Once approved by the inventory team, the inventory project manager will ask for a Scope of Work ( SOW ) from outside cooperators (also known as a Detailed Implementation Plan ( DIP )), noting that funding is contingent on their completion of an approved the SOW . + Review and approve Detailed Implementation Plans. + Coordinate with outside Principal Investigators on vegetation and pollinator inventory projects. + Serve as a pollinator inventory project manager and as part of the NPS Inventory Program team. + Serve as project manager, scheduling project kick-off calls and progress check-ins to ensure the inventory project is fulfilling the program requirements. + Review draft deliverables, publishing data packages to datastore and coordinating report publication + Act as peer-review manager, facilitating peer review of reports and other products as appropriate + Supervise field work when appropriate. + Train new hires and interns in field methods. Review their project proposals, mentor the team (individually and as a team), and supervise each project from start to finish. + Communicate with the Inventory Program Team on a weekly basis with project status and updates. + Act as a co-designer and reviewer of sampling designs and scopes of work from pollinator inventory projects. Design sampling plans for pollinator inventory projects for parks that cannot provide expertise in house. Analyze data from pollinator inventory projects. Supervise the development of historic datasets that will be used for understanding what pollinators may be present in national park units. + Development of pollinator field guides for national park units. + Review science communication products from pollinator inventory projects and disseminate appropriately. Supervise the creation of relevant web articles summarizing inventory projects. + Communicate the results of inventory projects (see Species Inventory Communication Strategy for details). + Hiring, scheduling, logistics for camping and housing, equipment ordering and inventory, training crews on pollinator and vegetation sampling and handling methods, training on data collection and analysis, support and mentorship.
