Summary\:

The Vet Tech Supervisor (VTS) is responsible for ensuring the ULAR veterinary technicians are providing high-quality care to the research animals at Temple University within the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) department as directed by the department’s veterinarians.  The VTS must have demonstrated competency and proficiency working with a wide variety of laboratory animals, including rodents and large animals as well as the ability to train individuals in animal handling, the administration of medications by all available routes, identification of clinical signs of illness and disease, and the induction and monitoring of anesthesia.  Additionally, the Vet Tech Supervisor will ensure staff veterinarians have assistance with treatments and procedures. Prior supervisory experience is preferred but not required.

 

For this senior-level position, the Vet Tech Supervisor is responsible for supervising the ULAR veterinary technicians including performance management and must be able to work independently with little to no supervision.    The VTS must be able to think independently to ensure the health and well-being of the animals under their care and make good decisions regarding treatments with guidance from staff veterinarians.  He/she must be able to direct other veterinary technicians and coordinate other team members efficiently and effectively to ensure they follow the directions of the department veterinarians.  This individual must be able to assess an animal’s condition and be able to translate the best veterinary practices to provide optimal comfort and care for the animals and be able to quickly assess situations and make judgments that maximize animal welfare and minimize negative impacts on research.

 

Essential Functions\:

Animal Care

*Perform health checks on all animals on a scheduled basis for any signs of illness or injury.

*Know all basic husbandry standards of care for all species housed at Temple and be able to provide that care.

*Assist ULAR veterinarians with evaluation (including diagnostics) of any animal found with illness or injury.

*Ensure directions and instructions given by ULAR veterinarians are carried out completely and properly by the ULAR Veterinary Technicians.

*Evaluate treatment effectiveness and be able to relay progress to ULAR veterinarians.

*Use good judgement in determining proper methodology when working with animals and working safely and efficiently to minimize injury to animals or personnel.

*Properly document treatments and procedures in the animal medical record, as well as completion of tasks on room logs.

*Help develop standard treatment regimens for common illnesses and injuries.

*Must be able to follow all SOPs applicable to animal care.

*Must be familiar with regulations as stated in the Animal Welfare Regulations, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (latest edition) and other requirement when working with animals in research.

*Other duties as assigned to support animal care and welfare.

 

Surgical Support/Anesthesia

*Provide proper pre-, peri-, and post-operative animal care and associated husbandry.

*Set up operating suite (operating rooms, procedure rooms, recovery rooms, surgeon prep rooms) properly to include disinfection of rooms, equipment, and supplies.

*Work in systems requiring aseptic technique.

*Provide proper induction and maintenance of anesthesia for all species used in Temple research projects and clinical cases.

*Demonstrate competency and proficiency in managing anesthesia with little to no direct supervision.

*Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot anesthesia problems with regards to the animal’s quality of anesthesia or the operation of the anesthetic equipment.

*Assist with surgical procedures to provide best outcomes for the patient.

*Be able to assist investigators with recommendations for best veterinary practices regarding anesthesia and surgical techniques.

*Maintain proper records regarding anesthetic procedures, including anesthesia monitoring.

*Perform proper medical waste disposal, including final disposition of animals.

*Submitting proper forms for billing and chargebacks for applicable procedures.

*Must be able to help define and refine procedures used by ULAR veterinary personnel.

*Must be able to follow all SOPs applicable to surgical and anesthetic procedures.

 

Preventive Health

*Coordinate the rodent health surveillance program under the guidance of the ULAR veterinarians and based on established SOPs.

*Must be able to identify sick or injured animals to identify potential infectious disease issues in animal colonies.

*Must be able to perform physical examinations on rodents and large animals to identify illnesses or injuries.

*Must be able to document findings properly in the animal medical record.

*Provide feedback based on knowledge and experience to improve rodent health surveillance program.

*Manage veterinary technicians to complete tasks for animal health surveillance testing within required time frames.

*Must be able to work in systems to minimize biosecurity risks to research animals.

*Must be able to work with, understand, and troubleshoot environmental and equipment monitoring (anesthesia machines, autoclaves, bacteriological monitoring, etc.)

 

Training

*Provide training for research and ULAR staff as needed in areas based on personal knowledge and expertise.

*Assist with training of other veterinary technicians through demonstration and evaluation of techniques new to them.

*Develop PowerPoint presentations to train research and ULAR staff members in areas relevant to each group’s job requirements.

 

Management & Administrative Tasks

*Supervising and performance management of current ULAR veterinary technicians.

*Oversight of the hiring process for veterinary technician candidates, when applicable

*Coordinating the weekly veterinary technician schedule.

*Schedule the completion of daily veterinary technician tasks.

*Schedule the use of the surgical suite

*Ensure that all medical records and room logs are completed by the veterinary technicians at describes in departmental SOPS.

*Scheduling the completion of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and yearly tasks.

*Monitoring the inventory of veterinary drugs and equipment.

*Schedule all veterinary equipment maintenance and certification.

*Other administrative tasks as assigned.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience\:

Bachelor’s degree in a life science or related discipline and four (4) years’ experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

Required Skills & Abilities\:

*Ability to read, write, and understand the English language.

*Willingness to work with and handle rodents, USDA-covered species, and other animal species involved in the Temple University animal program.

*Demonstrated ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs.

*Must be able to operate standard laboratory equipment (autoclaves, centrifuges, animal clippers, anesthesia monitoring equipment, etc.)

*Strong organizational skills, along with the ability to be detail-oriented and to handle multiple tasks.

*Strong written and verbal communication skills

*Demonstrated computer skills, along with the ability to operate standard office equipment and software including MS Office.

*Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse populations of students, faculty and staff.

*Ability to work occasional overtime, including early mornings and/or late afternoons, and weekend and holiday rotations.

 

Preferred\:

*Master’s Degree in life science discipline

*Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, RVT, etc.)

*AALAS certification at LAT level or higher

*Experience with Live Animal Anesthesia

*Experience with surgical support and recovery

*Veterinary technician with increasing responsibilities over time
