Join Battelle as the Veterinarian III where you will ensure high quality veterinary care and evaluations associated with sponsored preclinical study execution and research and development objectives for our Health Business Unit. This position will:

 

Develop, maintain, and evaluate veterinary care and procedures while championing regulatory compliance against evolving regulatory requirements.Manage required regulatory reporting; prepare documents for submission to regulatory authorities.Provide consultation and training to personnel with regards to best practices in animal care and use in research to promote and enhance animal welfare.Serve as a leader in the organization, driving positive collaboration across functional groups.

 

As a member of Battelle’s Life Sciences Research organization, you will report to the Manager, Pathology & Lab Animal Support and work with Management, Study Directors, Technicians, Animal Behaviorist and Safety throughout the animal research lifecycle for assigned projects. This position supports operations primarily located in West Jefferson, OH but may also provide support for our headquarters in Columbus, OH.

Responsibilities Author and develop Operational SOPs, IACUC protocols and procedures (in consult with IACUC Chair), work instructions and forms, develop training models, reference materials, and presentations to ensure target staff obtain and sustain proficiencies sufficient to comply with applicable regulations and required submissions.Train staff in animal care and use.Direct all regulatory matters and lead strategy to ensure the Health Business Unit complies with applicable regulations.Lead and direct proposal and project teams on regulatory matters.Ensure Compliance with Regulations and Policies: Ensure that the program is in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”, AAALAC International, BBRC Animal Care and IACUC policies, all state and city rules and regulations, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the FDA (GLP) requirements.Assist with the inspections and renewals of accreditations and certifications.Engage with other veterinarians to maintain and advance the animal care and use program including preventative medicine, routine and emergency veterinary care, surgery, health surveillance, and use of in vivo models in biomedical research.Key Qualifications DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited institutionACLAM Board CertifiedLicensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. stateFive years of laboratory animal experience in an academic or industry setting serving as Attending VeterinarianUSDA accreditation or application submitted within 1 month of hireU.S. Citizenship Laboratory experience working with in vivo modelsAbility to work with a high priority focused on biosecurity, attention to detail, and timeliness. Individual must demonstrate persistence and energy in a dynamic, fast-paced, and demanding work environmentWillingness to learn at a rapid pace in results oriented, teamwork environmentAbility to work weekends on a rotational on-call basisEffective verbal and written communication skills, sufficient for accurate transmission of information internally within team and across the organizationWork may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used. Work requires the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols.Must be willing to participate in a medical health surveillance program and be able to wear personal protective equipment as requiredThis position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and FDA approved immunizations.Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice requirements for animal facilities.Experience with product and study development under the Animal Rule.Experience with both commercial and government clients.

Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen and capable of obtaining Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.Must be willing to be immunized with licensed and FDA approved vaccines and medications recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents.Newly hired employees are subject to a 90-day Introductory Period, during which their performance is evaluated and supervised. The applicant selected will be subject to a Security Risk Assessment (SRA). Drug-free workplace; random urine testing for drugs is mandatory.
