Veterinary Extern - General Practice ABQ Petcare Hospital
At ABQ Petcare Hospital, 4th-year veterinary students can expect to be involved in more advanced surgeries - anything from nephrectomies to liver lobectomies. It all depends on what is in the hospital when the student is here. We do not do orthopedics. We perform a lot of ultrasounds and scopes. We do see referrals for these things from other clinics in the area. We have 3 to 4 doctors who are willing to help students while here. We have the opportunity for them to see their own cases with the supervision of the Managing DVM.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.     Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.    Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
