Job Description
Maintenance and support of research animal health under the direction of the veterinarian or study requirements. You will be responsible for ensuring the health and welfare of animals used in research studies, including providing preventative and maintenance care, assisting with procedures, and maintaining accurate records.
ResponsibilitiesFollow all safety and security policies during shifts by maintaining a working knowledge of applicable regulations and complying with all internal requirements.Ensure that all appropriate regulations, procedures, and data collection protocols are followed throughout the course of a study.Provide preventative care and maintenance care for all animal species, including performing weights, vaccinations, sample collections, administering medications, and performing physical exams.Support post-operative chronic procedures by performing animal recoveries, conducting pain scores, managing post-procedure cases, applying and removing bandages, collecting samples, administering medications, and monitoring anesthesia.Communicate clearly through documentation on the electronic medical record, emails, and verbal communications with the veterinarian.Process clinical pathology samples in-house and send samples to various labs as needed.Ensure all animals have adequate enrichment and social housing requirements.Clean and maintain assigned areas of the lab, assist with kennel and animal care, and communicate any animal health status issues to the veterinarian and study director/sponsor.Maintain and backup all necessary records to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including animal treatment records, data forms, and drug logs.Coordinate inventory management with other lab staff, pursue information on new/updated supplies and equipment, and consult with the manager on any new supply/equipment issues.Induce and maintain anesthesia, monitor physiological status, and take appropriate action for animals on acute or chronic studies.Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all equipment, support instruments, test equipment, and veterinary techniques.Maintain animal health throughout the study through consultation with the veterinarian on diagnosis and treatment, administering prescribed therapy, and monitoring response to treatment.Perform pre-purchase physical and vaccination history examination and communicate the suitability of each shipment of animals to the veterinarian and animal vendor.Assist with/conduct necropsies under the direction of the veterinarian/pathologist, properly label and document specimens, photograph gross pathology, coordinate histopathologic exams, and log reports.Assist in pathology assessments by preparing, sending, and receiving specimens to/from contract labs according to GLP guidelines.Coordinate lab projects as directed by the manager, communicate the status of all ongoing projects, and maintain all installed equipment in the lab facility.Use extensive research experience to aid in study design and conduct, including making suggestions on study design, procedures, and protocols, planning study schedules, setting up and maintaining test equipment, interpreting data, and record retention.Essential SkillsAA Degree or equivalent work experience in a related discipline.1-2 years of related experience.Certified veterinary technician.Experience with animals in a pre-clinical setting, especially pigs, dogs, and sheep.Experience with GDP documentation and GLP studies.Additional Skills & QualificationsAttention to detail.Strong communication skills.Work Environment
This is a full onsite position with a shift from Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 7 PM. Some holiday and weekend hours may be needed. The department provides excellent animal enrichment, including an outdoor area where animals can get fresh air when possible. The facility handles pigs, sheep, and canines.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $28.00
