The Veterinary Technician II, within Small Animal General Surgery, plays a crucial role in supporting faculty, staff, and veterinary students with patient care, treatments, and imaging procedures. This position also ensures that the service area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital remains clean, sanitary, and well-organized, contributing to a high standard of veterinary care and education.

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.
Please Note: Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. This position may require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty.
Required Education and Experience
+ Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
+ Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine
+ Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital, such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, defibrillators, nebulizers preferred.
* The well-qualified candidate will also possess a Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Additionally, they should have two years of relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System and at least two years of experience in a veterinary medical setting. Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician is a plus.
Responsibilities
+ Performs and Instructs: Performs and instructs students in proper anesthetic procedures including induction, maintenance, and recovery. Maintains anesthesia machines and multi-parameter monitoring equipment. Performs proper aseptic surgical site preparation. Assists the surgeon during a surgical or diagnostic procedure. Properly bandages and provides wound care for patients. Posts the surgery/appointment schedule in a timely manner. Organizes a daily surgery and diagnostic schedule by communicating with all involved services. Assists the anesthesia service as needed with surgical and diagnostic cases pertaining to the assigned service. Assists in bronchoscopic procedures. Assists in all surgery services providing technical support due to absence of assigned technician or caseload requires. Acts as scrub nurse in advanced soft tissue surgical procedures such as laproscopic and thorascopic procedures.
+ Monitor and Record Data: Correctly transfers patients to the appropriate service areas and clinicians in VMIS. Correctly enters appropriate fees into the hospital computer information system (VMIS). Ensures that all charges generated from treatments, procedures, and supplies are correctly entered (VMIS). Enters patient data into the hospital computer information system. Properly records all medications given to patients. Assists with return of radiographs to referral veterinarians. Maintains Suture Study logs and documents all communications with clients.
+ Ass i st Faculty, Residents, and I nterns: Instructs, guides and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Keeps patients cleaned and groomed. Places and maintains IV catheters. Administers and monitors patient diets as prescribed by the clinician. Exercises patients. Collects or assists with the collection of the patient's blood, urine, and tissue samples. Properly submits patient's blood, urine, and tissue samples for analysis. Assists with and instructs students in performing proper physical examinations and diagnostic procedures. Properly medicates patients as directed by the clinician. Teaches students proper patient restraint for safe handling of patients.
+ Instructs and Guides Veterinary Students: Participates in continuing education seminars by teaching and attending. Participates in instruction of the clinical skills lab. Participates in instruction of 3rd year Orthopedics Bandaging Lab. Provides student orientation to new rotations on all surgery services when required.
+ Maintain Service Area within the VMTH: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service area. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains records of expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Schedules equipment maintenance as needed. Assists with maintaining minor procedures room. Prepares sterile supplies and instruments.
+ Employee Training: Assists and facilitates new employees within all of the surgery services with data entry, scheduling of diagnosti c and surgical procedures, and other related tasks. Del egates tasks to student workers. Assi st with cross traini ng of current employees .
+ Provides Physical Restraint: Provides proper physical restraint to allow for safe handling of patients.
+ General: Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, radiation Safety, Infection Control, Aseptic Technique, and maintains licensure or certification where appropriate. Provides back-up support to other services withing the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Performs additional duties as required.
