Veterinary Technician III
Responsibilities **General Purpose** Provides direct primate research support at the professional level and takes charge of the health and safety of a primate colony. **Specific Responsibilities** Under general direction and exercising independent technical judgment, is in charge of a segment of complex research in a larger project, or works independently in specialized research assignments. Responsibilities include most or all of the following, as well as other related duties: Prepares, monitors and recovers primates during anesthesia and paralysis for adaptive optics imaging. This involves primate specific positioning in a custom stereotaxic cart, contact lens placement and eye preparation, close physiological monitoring and adjustment of plane of anesthesia for several hours and recovery. These procedures involve the use of a ventilator and anesthesia machine, stereotaxic cart, custom contact lenses, pulse oximeters and observation of the pupil size and quality. (25%) Responsible for the health of a non-human primate colony (marmosets), which includes monitoring and decision making surrounding post-operative complications in primates that have received eye surgery. (25%) Ensures primates are comfortable with colony and acclimated to performing behavioral experiments with primates. May help in training primates in specific behavioral tasks (25%) Insures that health and safety practices are maintained in accordance with University policy and the law. (10%) Coordinates purchasing for non-human primate research: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials and minor construction. May recommend expenditures for laboratory equipment and authorize expenditures for expendable supplies. (10%) Designs or collaborates in designing research equipment. Evaluates the performance of research equipment, making or recommending correctional design changes or developing new approaches for its use. (5%) **Requirements** + Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology required; + Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology preferred. + Four years as a practicing licensed veterinary technician with extensive surgical and anesthetic experience preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a biomedical research facility preferred. + Knowledge of Federal and State Animal Welfare Regulations and current veterinary care standards required by AAALAC, + International and NIH preferred. + Current NY state professional license as a veterinary technician required.
