Position Summary: 

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University is seeking a motivated veterinary technician or assistant dedicated to serving both the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University and the Large Animal Field Service. In this position, which includes service with the mobile Large Animal Field Service unit and the Large Animal Field Service department, the selected candidate will assist with the field service appointments, scheduling, client communication, inventory and diagnostics under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.  Salary will be level assigned commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Large Animal Field Service Veterinary Technician or Assistant’s essential duties and responsibilities include the following:  

Must continually and consistently maintain a humane and caring attitude toward the animals in their care as well as a collegial and compassionate attitude with clients, students and fellow co-workers.  

Proper handling and restraint of animals (large animal species).  

Accompanying veterinarians in the Large Animal Field Service trucks going to appointments.  

Assisting with performing in-house diagnostics, sending referral diagnostics and inputting results into the electronic medical record system.  

Assisting with radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy, dentals, castrations, and other elective field procedures.  

Responsible for maintaining health services: adhering to all service protocols, medical treatments, etc. and accurate record keeping at all times including entry into designated medical management software, drug logs and animal medical records as well as ensuring timely accurate documentation.  

Responsible for interacting, teaching, and assisting veterinary students.  

Performs other duties as assigned. This includes but is not limited to answering client and patient related phone calls and responding to emails that may arise, scheduling appointments; assisting with inventory, ordering and organizing supplies; cleaning instruments, diagnostic tools and keeping field trucks organized.  

 

Required Qualifications:  

At least two (2) years of job experience in the field of veterinary medicine and/or working with large animals required. 

Basic equine knowledge, skills and handling experience required. 

Ability to handle and restrain large animal species (i.e. cattle, goats, sheep, swine) preferred. 

Available to work flexible hours, including weekends and holiday shifts. 

Some tasks will require physical effort and lifting/carrying of objects and animals up to 50 pounds.  

Must be flexible and adaptable. 

Ability to work cordially, safely, and efficiently in face-paced, stressful conditions. 

Ability to cope with loss of animal life from illness, injury and euthanasia. 

Ability to safely and humanely handle large animal species. 

 

Veterinary Assistant minimum education/training requirements:  

High School Diploma or GED required. 

Veterinary assistant training preferred. 

 

Veterinary Technician minimum education/training requirements:  

High School Diploma required. 

AVMA accredited veterinary technician training completed OR minimum one (1) year of veterinary technician work experience required. 

Proficient in veterinary assistant basic responsibilities required. 

Experience providing basic wellness and preventative care information to clients preferred. 

Experience handling and logging controlled drugs preferred. 

Experience starting subjective section of wellness SOAP notes for veterinarians during history taking preferred. 

Proficient in blood draw/venous blood sampling of large animal species for diagnostic testing preferred. 

Proficient in administering oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenous injections as directed in large animal species preferred. 

Proficient in anesthesia record keeping for routine procedures preferred.

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the Glassboro, New Jersey west campus, 22 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine plans to admit its first class of DVM students in 2025, pending accreditation approval.
