Summary
The Video Processing and Tracking Engineer II has the opportunity to work with engineering development and R&D to develop a variety of innovative capabilities - computer vision detection, classification, localization, and tracking solutions focused on implementation for defense and commercial applications. These development efforts are generally small focused design teams which will require one to use a range of skills and tools across traditional engineering, computer science, and mathematical disciplines including computer vision, machine learning, optimization, deep convolutional neural networks, and visual tracking. This position works on a variety of stages of development including requirements definition, concept design, prototyping, detailed design, test and evaluation, and validation and verification testing.
Position Responsibilities
Develops Video Processing Chain for Computer Vision (CV) on embedded systems to enhance the autonomy of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, UAV), and computer vision and machine learning systems architecture/hardware and integration. Develops FPGA firmware, Ubuntu ARM Linux software, and/or GPU accelerated algorithmsCodes and tests software to support the integration of machine learning and visual tracking into aircraft (such as autopilots, payloads, or other functional components) or other robotic systemsSupports Implementation of machine learning and visual tracking systems and validate designs through a series of designed experiments. Supports video processing development as it applies to autonomy, tracking, UAS operation, object identification, and control systemsSupports development of computer vision & machine learning algorithms capable of tracking objects-of-interest from a group 1 UAV across a wide range of viewpoints using existing gimballed camera payloadConducts engineering analysis & trade studies for determining appropriate algorithms for specific productsDevelops software for products using established software development practices & configuration controlSupports transition of development projects to production; Support flight test operationsSupports design reviews as called upon by product design team and the development of system requirements, system test plans, and assist in validation testingWorks on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actionOther duties as assignedBasic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or related field is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experienceMinimum 2 - 5 years' relevant engineering experienceExperienced developing Visual Tracking Software Video Processing ChainsExperienced with Python, C, C++, and OpenCVExperienced Managing Research Program Flight Tests and demonstrationsDemonstrated understanding of Visual tracking development for military or commercial applicationsDemonstrated understanding of Feedback and Controls performance tuning mechanismSome intrastate travel and other travel within the Continental U.S. may be required (up to 30%), as well as some weekend workEmbedded ARM Linux software, GPU/ CUDA, Video Pipeline, C++, Python, CVOther Matrixed Skills include:

MS/Ph.D. degree in Robotics, Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering is preferredResearch or industrial experience is preferred. Hands-on design/build experience is desired; UAV, R/C aircraft or other lightweight miniature robotic systemsExperience with UAV or R/C aircraft or other lightweight miniature robotic systems desiredResearch or industrial experience in the development of visual tracking desiredExperience employing GPU's, DSPs, or FPGA to accelerate video processing applications under Linux/ARM preferredExperience modifying and compiling Ubuntu Linux Kernels for embedded ARM systems preferredExperience developing drivers for Linux/ARM and Robot Operating System (ROS) preferredExperience with Matlab, Robot Operating System (ROS) & Ubuntu on Nvidia Jetson and/or Xilinx Zynq preferredDemonstrates familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System)Has respect for-profit and strives to meet project schedule and budget. $102,708 - $145,530AeroVironment considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the location, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.
