The Office of University Communications at the University of Virginia seeks a video producer to help support its core mission of elevating the reputation of the University while promoting and strengthening its brand regionally, nationally, and internationally. The video producer will produce video content from conceptualization through to distribution in support of broad University priorities.
As a member of University Communications’ exceptionally talented, collaborative and dynamic Creative team, the video producer, along with colleagues, will deliver high-quality and authentic videos that celebrate the University, its people and its culture. The video producer will seek to capture the unique voices of our community, creating storytelling that is compelling, human and truthful. On any given day, the work of a video producer might consist of quick-turn news videos, trending social media reels, short-form documentary productions, or licensing and marketing pieces.
University Communications is looking for someone with an interest in the University’s mission, curiosity about the community where they live and work, and a desire to learn and grow their craft. This role is for a video producer who can conceptualize and create video content for a variety of platforms, and collaborate with colleagues across the department, as well as with partners across the University.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works as part of Creative Team for University Communications, partnering with colleagues across Marketing, Digital, Licensing, and News & Content verticals to address communications and visual storytelling opportunities.Produces videos from conceptualization through to distribution. Responsible for entire production process, including concepting, pre-production, interviewing, directing, cinematography, and editing. This also includes creating all final deliverables, including various video files/formats, thumbnails, caption files, links/embed codes, etc.Researches relevant University stories and themes to align with departmental priorities and overarching video strategy. Identifies potential video content and leads in the ideation and storyboarding for broad video concepts, collaborating with appropriate stakeholders.Organizes and directs film shoots as assigned by supervisor, including the movement, set-up, and inventory of equipment. Directs on-screen talent, and as applicable, interviews subjects for story content.Edits video into final products, including making cutdowns for various digital specifications and social media use.Assists senior producers with shoots and the movement, set-up, and inventory of equipment.Assists senior producers with editing, including making cutdowns for various digital specifications and social media use.Works with senior producers to meet deadlines, maintain schedules, contact subjects, and communicate these tasks to project stakeholders.Attends video meetings as determined by supervisor, tracking decisions made within those meetings.Works with senior producers on video server upkeep, including archiving projects, purging, and maintenance.Assists with maintenance and upkeep of production vehicle and equipment.Works with senior producers on recording and reporting multimedia budget expenses.SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
Collaborative, deadline-driven, willing to take creative direction, and able to manage several projects at once in a competent manner. Understanding of concepting, script writing, pre-production and scheduling, directing talent (actors and non-actors), microphone placement, audio recording, and conducting interviews.Proficiency with Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, and Adobe Photoshop.Bonus skills:Proven cinematography skills, including experience with lighting, cinematic camera operation, drone, gimbal operation, and audio editing.Interest in social media and YouTube optimizationREQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

ABOUT OUR CREATIVE TEAM:
The Creative team within the Office of University Communications works as a small creative agency and consists of art directors, designers, writers, photographers, and filmmakers. The work covers a variety of disciplines, including digital + print design, branding, environmental, advertising, editorial, merchandise, social media, photography, and video production. The Creative team’s core mission is to elevate, refine, and advance the University of Virginia brand. In addition to working on institutional branding, design, and advertising for the University as a whole, the Creative team collaborates on a wide range of projects with a variety of university partners, including the President’s Office, Enrollment, Athletics, and many others.
