Visiting Assistant Professor of Archaeology
Wesleyan University
The Department of Classical Studies and the Archaeology Program at Wesleyan University invite applications for a full-time, visiting Assistant Professor in classical history and material culture, with a specialization in the Western Mediterranean. The initial appointment is for one year beginning in July 2025 with the possibility of renewal for an additional two years. We are seeking candidates whose research focuses on interactions between the Roman world and surrounding cultures and whose methods and courses can demonstrate the ways in which ancient history and archaeology contribute to current conversations including human rights, political institutions, ethnicity, the environment, or cultural property. The successful candidate may be either an historian or an archaeologist, but will have demonstrated experience in blending innovative teaching with rigorous methodological approaches to the interpretation of classical texts, objects, and sites. The teaching load is five courses for the academic year and will include a survey course in Greek or Roman history, a survey course in Roman art and archaeology, and a seminar in their research specialty. Candidates should also be able to contribute to the language curriculum in either Latin or Greek. The PhD must be in hand by the time of the appointment.
The application deadline is Friday, March 14. A complete application will include electronic versions of (1) a letter of application, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a research statement, and (4) a teaching statement which addresses strategies for fostering inclusivity in the classroom in general. Applicants invited for interview on Zoom will be asked to supply a writing sample of no more than 25 pages and the email addresses of three referees from whom we may obtain confidential letters of recommendation.
Applications should be addressed to Professor Christopher Parslow, chair of the search committee, at http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/ (http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/5705)
