The University of Maryland College Park UMD seeks a visiting assistant research scholar to conduct research and participate in programming for the 1856 Project 1856P The 1856 Project is UMDs chapter of Universities Studying Slavery a multi institutional consortium dedicated to sharing best practices for reckoning with the role that human bondage has played in establishing and sustaining their institutions The 1856P was established to cultivate open and respectful dialogue to create deeper understanding and a path for restorative history The UMD 1856P activities include investigating the history of the African American experience on campus and in surrounding communities conducting research and analyses that identify and document UMDs historical connections to US slavery and its legacies and disseminating findings to campus stakeholders and to the public through regularmeetings community outreach and engagement symposia conferences reportsscholarly papers and by creating teaching material and learning opportunities Building off already identified themes the visiting assistant research scholar will develop lead and collaborate on research directly associated with the specific 1856 Project mission The successful applicant will collaborate most closely with the1856P leadership from University Libraries however the visiting assistant research scholar will also be encouraged to collaborate with other colleagues and departments across campus in furthering the research objectives of the 1856P The visiting assistant research scholar will also have the opportunity to establish a formal affiliation with anacademic department particularly allied with the research scholars academic discipline andor research interestsThe visiting assistant research scholar position is full time 12 months and will be awarded for one year beginning in the August of 2024 with the possibility of renewing We seek applicants with doctoral degrees in African American or Africana studies American studies anthropology archaeology archival research history library and information sciences or other disciplines allied with the 1856Ps mission and objectivesSalary Range 70000 75000 commensurate with experience
