Position Description:
Rowan University is accepting applications for the position of full-time temporary Visiting Professor in the Respiratory Therapy Program. Offering entry-level and degree-advancement programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy, the Rowan University Respiratory Therapy program is located in the new Health Sciences Center on the campus of Rowan College of Jersey in Sewell, NJ. The entry-level and degree-advancement baccalaureate programs hold provisional accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
The successful candidate will be expected to be a collaborative member of a dynamic team and to assist with the ongoing development and implementation of the new BS in Respiratory Therapy Entry into Practice program. The successful candidate will be expected to teach didactic and laboratory courses in the program, maintain currency in content and pedagogy through professional development, and provide service to the department in which the program is housed.
The Respiratory Therapy program at Rowan is administratively housed within the Rowan-Virtua School of Nursing and Health Professions. The successful candidate will hold a one-year Visiting Professor position and will report to the Program Director. They will be expected to assist with curriculum and course development within the program, including lab courses, as well as with program assessment, in addition to teaching courses as a full-time faculty member.
Responsibilities of the position:
+ Teach primarily in the entry-level program, including didactic, lab, and virtual courses
+ Demonstrate current working knowledge of respiratory care and best practices
+ Assist in coordinating effective and meaningful assessment of program outcomes and student learning outcomes
+ Assist with initial and follow up accreditation reporting
+ Contribute to continuing development of entry-level program curricula
+ Assist with development and implementation strategies for student retention and success
+ Perform other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
+ Master’s degree in a health science or related field
+ Associate degree/equivalent or higher in respiratory therapy from an accredited institution
+ Valid Registered Respiratory Therapy credential and current NJ state license
+ Preferred minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least two (2) years in clinical respiratory care
+ Minimum of two (2) years’ experience teaching either as an appointed faculty member in a CoARC-accredited respiratory care program or as a clinical instructor/ preceptor for students of such programs
+ Experience teaching in various classroom settings (clinical, lab, classroom, virtual)
+ Utilization of innovative teaching methods incorporating technology, including on-line resources
+ Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology or proven ability to learn these skills
+ Ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners in large and small settings
+ Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment.
Supplemental Information
The physical demands described below are representative of those necessary to fulfill the essential functions of the job. Instruction in use of equipment and activities associated with patient care replicates the clinical setting and requires physical capacity comparable to that of a practicing respiratory therapist. Candidates must be able to meet the criteria listed below related to mobility, physical endurance, motor skills (fine & gross), tactile, visual, hearing, and mental/attitudinal standards:
+ Mobility and strength sufficient to support and move patients, large gas cylinders and large bulky equipment. Must be able to lift objects weighing 40 pounds.
+ Physical endurance ability sufficient to work in a clinical setting for eight (8) to twelve (12) hours performing physical tasks requiring physical energy without jeopardizing patient safety.
+ Fine and gross motor skills sufficient to handle equipment and provide safe and effective patient care; steady arm and hand movements while manipulating objects or assisting patients.
+ Bilateral tactile ability sufficient to manipulate syringes and other small pieces of equipment and sufficient to assess patients before and after therapy.
+ Visual ability sufficient to see, adjust and monitor ventilator and other equipment settings. Visual ability sufficient to assess and monitor patients.
+ Auditory ability sufficient to hear and understand patients and staff. Auditory ability sufficient to assess and monitor patient sounds, and to hear equipment and patient monitoring device alarms.
+ Mental/attitudinal ability sufficient to interact with patients and other health care personnel in providing appropriate patient care, exhibiting attitudes and actions consistent with the ethical standards of the profession.
